Leonato has a daughter named Hero, with whom Claudio quickly becomes infatuated. It was and by , who also stars in the film. Shakespeare is challenging to understand and this particularly play has some serious issues with it, and I watch Shakespeare adaptations in part just to see how people repackage the Bard and try to deal with the complexity of the language. Also present are Benedick's friend Claudio, a young count; and Don John who, despite his rebellion, has apparently reconciled with his brother. I'm digressing, but you get the idea. The budding love between Claudio and Hero prompts Don Pedro to arrange with Leonato for a marriage.
I won't go too much deeper into the plot, because most viewers probably had to read the play in high school or college. He eventually listens to the Friar's counsel and becomes party to the pretence that Hero has died in order to test Claudio's remorse over his humiliation of Hero, before finally reuniting the two young lovers in the last act. In short, Don Pedro, his right-hand man Claudio, and his brother Don John visit a noble named Leonato. Synopsis A modern retelling of Shakespeare's classic comedy about two pairs of lovers with different takes on romance and a way with words. The cast is uniformly excellent, but I found Amy Ackerling and Nathan Fillion particularly effective.
He loves his daughter immensely but upon hearing the false news that she was being unfaithful to Claudio, he wishes she had never been born if that would mean that he would be spared the pain of her disgrace. Despite being one of his lighter plays it feels overly serious throughout. Don Pedro, Leonato, and Claudio stage a conversation containing a false account of how much Beatrice loves Benedick, all the while knowing Benedick to be hiding within earshot. While in Messina, Claudio falls for Leonato's daughter Hero Jillian Morgese , while Benedick verbally spars with Beatrice Amy Acker , the governor's niece. The characters are dull and unmemorable and I kept getting the men mixed up.
Accompanying Don Pedro is the witty Benedick, former lover of Leonato's equally sharp-tongued niece, Beatrice. The soundtrack was released May 4, 1993 through and features twenty-four tracks of score at a running time just under an hour. Despite Dogberry's incompetence, the truth of Don John's sinister machinations is revealed. Moments later, Don John is marched in, having been captured before he could escape. Meanwhile, the villainous Don John, with the help of his allies Conrade Riki Lindhome and Borachio Spencer Treat Clark , plots against the happy couple, using his own form of trickery to try to destroy the marriage before it begins. After leading a failed rebellion against Don Pedro, he conspires with his men Borachio and Conrade to stop Hero and Claudio's wedding by ruining Hero's honor. Meanwhile, Borachio and Conrade are interrogated by Dogberry and his men.
Leonato forgives Claudio on the condition that he publicly declare his wrongdoing and then marry Hero's cousin - Antonio's daughter - the next morning. A series of comic and tragic events may continue to keep the two couples from truly finding happiness, but then again perhaps love may prevail. While in Messina, Claudio falls for Leonato's daughter Hero Jillian Morgese , while Benedick verbally spars with Beatrice Amy Acker , the governor's niece. In the midst of all of this good-natured scheming, Don John has been searching for ways to stop the marriage between Claudio and Hero. Accompanying Don Pedro are two of his officers: Benedick Alexis Denisof and Claudio Fran Kranz. I will say that overall I'd give the edge the Kenneth Branaugh Emma Thompson movie version. Amidst the confusion, Don John quietly flees.
He and his men accidentally catch Borachio boasting about his involvement with separating Claudio and Hero. It's fun, romantic and full of great performances Even by Keanu Reeves! It's such a beautiful scene, in fact, that I grew misty eyed and euphoric, and that's how Shakespeare movies and plays are supposed to make you feel. Claudio has been thinking of Leonato's beautiful daughter Hero since before he went to war, and returns to find her as attractive as ever. But it's definitely worth watching. Beatrice gently rebuffs his proposal, and the two remain friends. In the days leading up to the ceremony, Don Pedro, with the help of Leonato, Claudio and Hero, attempts to sport with Benedick and Beatrice in an effort to trick the two into falling in love. Since it's a comedy, suffice to say that all's well that ends well.
When his plot is found out, he attempts to escape but is captured and imprisoned. But the entire cast stands out. Beatrice and Benedick linger a moment and eventually confess their love to one another. The night before the wedding, Don John's servant Borachio arranges a steamy liaison with Hero's gentlewoman Margaret at Hero's chamber window. He solves crimes and misdeeds accidentally.
For his performance in the film, Reeves was nominated for a for , where he lost to for. So for me, a black and white, modernized version of Much Ado About Nothing with a millennial vibe is appealing. If anything it just made it feel more dull and inconsequential. They all agree to the Friar's plan to publish the tale that Hero, upon the grief of Claudio's accusations, suddenly died. He assists Don John in sabotaging Claudio's and Hero's wedding by making Hero appear unfaithful and initially succeeds, but is caught boasting about his crime by Dogberry's men and forced to confess.
