Unhook the cable from the inside release handle, and take out the three bolts on the latch, and it pulls right out. Once the door is open, use a T27 screwdriver to remove the 3 screws at the bottom of the door holding the latch in place. If still having trouble you can gently widen the slot with a flat blade screwdriver and hammer 6 Repeat the process for the other end. Now I know what to do if the other does the same thing. The Ford's had problems with motor bearings and door latches, The Dodges had issues with transmissions and intake gaskets, the Chevy's had head gasket and rearend problems.
I just took mine off because of the same problem. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Its interesting that there is a 2nd piece of stick on plastic the size of the access hole, and over the access hole area that can be used as a stick on patch over the hole you have to make in the plastic to get to the mechanism. I discovered that the cable ends were all intact and the cables themselves were operable. Remove the screws and lift up on the bottom panel. Pull the top half of the door panel off towards you. This repair is just re-securing the cables to their proper position. This is not for the SuperCrew, Double cab, Crew cab, or CrewMax. They have great pictures and more examples. After the cable is completely in the cable ferrule, push the black rubber sleeve into the ferrule as far as it will go. You can now use a screwdriver to unlatch the lower door catch. You took all the guess work outa fixing this. The top portion is only connected with some clips inside the panel.
The latch cannot be replace by itself since it is completely incased in the mounting bracket along with its connection to the cable. If your lucky, the linkage keeper plastic of course will have just let go, and be right there. Find the cable that goes to the top latch and pull it. My back doors wouldn't open. Apparently something inside is broken or stuck and I have done all I know to do to get it to open short of breaking something.
Here is a fuzzy picture of the lower latch remounted in the door, with the zip tied cable in place. I have been able to remove all of the interior trim, but can not figure out how to release the top latch from inside of the pickup while the door is still closed. I then removed the latch, flushed it with Brake-Klean and re-lubricated it. I think they all suck for what we have to pay for them. Use pliers or a utility knife, making sure to not cut into the black rubber sleeve on the cable. I just worked on my brother's truck because he had the exact same issue.
Gently squeeze the new end into the slot. The driver's side, another story. Any other ideas on how to connect the wire housing so the mechanism will pull the wire and not just the whole thing? Try pulling on the cable from different angles, at the same time pushing the door open. Apparently, this plastic degrades over time and disintegrates, causing the cable to no longer be anchored where it should be. Sounds like the fix on this page combined with the info in the video below should fix my problem. I want to new replacement cable, so can anyone tell me where on the Internet, I can purchase it? So first problem, how do I get the doors open, second problem once I get the doors open, what do you think is causing the doors not to unlatch? My problem turned out to be the rubber mounting boot on the top cable broke off so the cable was not restrained when pulled. That will drive more traffic to my videos and that helps me make a little money If you don't understand how this works, feel free to ask me.
I also zipped it so it wouldnt fall off. Mine were both broken and I am in the process of fixing them. I got the panels off and went in thru the speaker hole after removing the speaker. I utalize this third door for my family everyday, not being able to utalize the third door is becoming upsetting to us all. Feel free to make comments and ask questions. A year or so later, the lower cable broke.
Please don't buy new cables unless there is some kinda major new engineering design they offer. I am unable to open either of the rear doors on the pickup. They do make a tool for taking panels off, but you can do it with a stiff putty knife. Remove the screws and lift up on the bottom panel. Hello, I've been a mechanic for many years and I've had hundreds of customers come into my shop complaining about broken Ford door cables and latches. Used a couple of zip ties to secure the upper cable into its proper place. I wrapped a good size zip tie around the cable and placed it into the metal cutout.
