It's impossible to miss the vibrancy and lifelike detail in the picture. Along with his close friend and confidant Stephan Maturin who also happens to be the ship's surgeon, Aubrey is now faced with the choice of retreating to England and admitting defeat or remaining at the Acheron's mercy. But the story is more than a series of chase and battle scenes, entertaining as those prove to be. At face value, that's understandable and not a problem. But there is an even more impressive star of the film--a star you will not see.
In April 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars, H. The Acheron is currently in the Atlantic off South America headed toward the Pacific in order to extend Napoleon's reach of the wars. Surprise, the brash Captain Jack Aubrey Russell Crowe and his trusted friend, the ship's scholarly surgeon, Stephen Maturin Paul Bettany , are ordered to hunt down and capture a powerful French vessel off the South American coast. First, it shows off the superior dynamics of lossless audio. In the course of the characters' epic journey, the movie travels the world -- from the coast of Brazil to the storm-tossed waters of Cape Horn, south through ice and snow, to the far side of the world, to the remote shores of The Galapagos Islands. Surprise, a British frigate, is under the command of Captain Jack Aubrey.
Midpoint: After losing the Acheron as a result of the lethal accident at Cape Horn, Jack has no choice but to spend the rest of the first half of the second act reacting. The reality, though, is that audiences chose the equivalent of a theme park ride over an excellent series of books that easily could have spawned even better sequels to Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Fox really screwed the pooch on the extras and shortchanged Blu-ray adopters shelling out big bucks for this title. But even more interesting are the dark scenes that manage to use low-level contrast to delineate characters and shapes. As in all the bright scenes, the shots of the Galápagos Islands show dramatic definition in land surfaces, water surfaces as well as skin tones. Want to browse examples of story structure? Both films were very well executed, and it makes sense that a movie appealing to younger audiences would gross significantly more at the box office. Several aspects of naval and ship service are explored.
Instead of the Surprise finding the Acheron, the captain abruptly wakes to discover the enemy bearing down on his much smaller ship. Surprise, when they're suddenly attacked by a superior enemy. The biggest disappointment of the film is that there would be no follow-up Master and Commander to follow Lucky Jack's exploits in the service of England's navy. The night scenes and darkened ship's chambers are where I expect some viewers to have problems resolving all the definition. This task will be a difficult one as Aubrey quickly learns in an initial battle with the Acheron that it is a bigger and faster ship than the Surprise, which puts the Surprise at a disadvantage. Aubrey and the Surprise's current orders are to track and capture or destroy a French privateer named Acheron.
After seven weeks of uneventful sailing, the Acheron strikes first, all but crippling the Surprise in an engagement in which Aubrey realizes his enemy's ship is nautically superior to his own. Climactic Moment: Even lengthy climax sequences must rise to a single red-hot point. I would much prefer a trilogy of Master and Commander films, but it was not to be. The latter part of the film takes place in the Galápagos Islands where the ship's Irish doctor and naturalist, Stephen Maturin Paul Bettany convinces Aubrey to let him explore and collect specimens in a pre-Darwinian subplot. Aubrey's single-mindedness in this seemingly impossible pursuit puts him at odds with the Surprise's doctor and naturalist, Stephen Maturin, who is also Aubrey's most trusted advisor on board and closest friend.
Aubrey and the Surprise's current orders are to track and capture or destroy a French privateer named Acheron. Watch the textures of volcanic rock as Maturin explores the terrain to collect specimens. After an abrupt and violent encounter with a French warship inflicts severe damage upon his ship, a captain of the British Royal Navy begins a chase over two oceans to capture or destroy the enemy, though he must weigh his commitment to duty and ferocious pursuit of glory against the safety of his devoted crew, including the ship's thoughtful surgeon, his best friend. More than any other aspect of the film, the realism and immersive quality of the audio puts the audience in the middle of the action. What seems to be a straightforward recording of a cannon firing is actually a blend of recordings engineered to complement the action and assigned to the appropriate channel in the mix. During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America. This time, he escapes under cover of darkness. The black-level detail is there to be mined, free of pixellation and excess noise. .
But he and the viewers are thrown for a loop by the First Plot Point. First Pinch Point: Captain Jack Aubrey and his crew spend the first half of the second act reacting to their second sighting of the Acheron.
