I used this which did install it in my Z: drive because it didn't change the file sizes of my C: drive. Completely broke vmware, bluestacks, and a few other things that needed to be reinstalled to get the services back. Google Chrome is already known for slowing down computers, ultimately leading to. It seems if chrome is installed on the same drive as windows it will bug out. This might also be a Windows problem, and come to think of it Windows did force-update my computer around that point although force-updates are regular with Win10 , which some people have reported on various places with Disk usage bugs, and apparently it affects users who've opened Steam as well.
Disabling an integral system service is ill advised. Chrome on anything else, fine! Install and run third-party system optimizer like to clean temporary files, cookies, cache junk data etc to optimize system performance and clear broken registry errors. Symptoms are the same, linking to a new page or sometimes clicking javascript elements on the page will trigger chrome to lock up with 100% disk utilization. Kill the one that is causing the problem. And fix broken missing registry errors.
In my case it seems to be mostly Disk related. I know this will look silly for some my tag but I have been fighting this exact situation since the upgrade. A new History file will be created and it will now be just a few kbs. I have tried installing windows 7 64 bit on a different hard drive and use chrome on that and it still does it. Now, I can finish it within minutes.
Restart windows, Now visit and and install the same. Why I'm not using Firefox could be that I've never got dependent on plugins, and the experience with Firefox is somewhat bloated and unpolished in my opinion. Through process of elimination, you'll likely find that one of them is pushing your hard drive to the limit. I just did a fresh reinstall of Windows 10. It's only Chrome with Windows 10. Simply turn off the toggle to temporarily disable the Extention or click on Remove option to completely delete the Extensions one by one.
So this is the solution that fixed my issue and I hope anyone who finds this, that it will fix yours as well. A bit of investigation showed that there was a bank protection software called Warsaw that causing it. I've seen that disabling prefetch fixes the issue, but I cannot even get to the settings window because of how laggy Chrome is. Close and reopen that website, and it happens again. Sometimes poorly coded, or it might just have a bug, on Extensions cause Different problems on chrome browser. Also, I don't have any Chrome extensions right now.
Did you follow the instructions exactly word by word and step by step as listed? Using firefox it works fine, but firefox doesn't have good support for html5 and youtube videos because it has to use flashplayer for most. I stopped Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Superfetch as suggested, so now my disk use is down from 100% to 85% as I write. I hate to go conspiracy nut, but I bet this doesn't happen with Edge! For those still having bad disk activity - Firefox was my other culprit. You can also choose to find out which tab is causing that problem. It's so bad for me I might have to stop using Chrome and switch to Edge or something. First press Win + R, type appwiz. You can disable it for a while, but then make sure to use to scan your computer.

Only real issue was the Start Menu was useless until the November update which fixed it. My finger was on the anniversary update but I also do 90% of my work in Chrome. But in my case it was a matter of being able to use Google Chrome at all. Install The Chrome Extension if you really need it.
When that happens as it does occasionally before the crashing, I open task manager and there are chrome files still open so I do an end process and all is fine. Thank you sooooooo much for this solution. This has been going on for a while now and I've noticed it to be only this computer. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. The bug uses a JavaScript code to create a loop, making it impossible to close the tab or the browser. This only started a few days ago.
