All of this said, in brightly lit environments, this presentation is at least watchable, if soft and very heavily grainy looking. It's at this point that the film tips over into self-parody and complete nonsense, with an addled tribal leader named Agon Henry Silva, not just chewing the scenery, but swallowing it whole who has somehow cowed a gaggle of thousands despite having little more than a fright wig to make him seem powerful. The group crosses the desert; two Askari are lost when Swarma trips a trap that opens a pit under the road to the city. The effects, opticals and sets however are still as cheap and unconvincing as they were first time around. The grain structure is not just heavy, it's not especially organic looking and gives the film a kind of pock marked, crosshatched quality, something that makes midrange and wide range shots and frankly even some close-ups look overly soft. The photo you see is of the actual Dvd for sale - not just one that looks like it. Rider Haggard, who introduced the adventure seeking character in what would ultimately become the best known of the Quatermain stories, and one which provided fodder for several feature films, including 1950's and its 1985 remake. The rest of the cast is good largely for unintentional laughs. The result is like a patchwork quilt, with near incompetent edits, fades and the like. An item that looks as if it was just taken out of shrink wrap.
The greater resolution of this Blu-ray also reveals some frankly shoddy looking process photography a sequence in a cave is almost comically incompetent looking. This is a somewhat problematic transfer that has the look of having been sourced from dupe elements. Cues in italics contain material composed by Jerry Goldsmith. The fact that so much of the score is so obviously modeled on John Williams' iconic work for Indiana Jones just makes the results all the sadder, frankly. Almost every comment I have read concerning Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold tends to talk about it in the tones of ridicule reserved for the works of Edward D. In his khaki duds and a bullet-proof undershirt, he exudes the dashing spirit of a game-show host.
This is all elements which becomes the force of the film. An award-winning actor like James Earl Jones must have wondered what he was doing in a film like this — and only have been thankful that it finds nothing for him to do. On the other hand, it is not particularly good film either. Maybe that's why I can still be entertained by it. The original Quatermain character was not exactly a model of political correctness, often espousing a typically 19th century set of attitudes about the destiny of white people and concepts like colonization and eminent domain. Chamberlain relished lusty libertine role. Allan and Jesse are assisted by Umslopogaas, a fearless warrior and old friend of Allan's, to put together an expedition.
