The contact stated that the speedometer displays inaccurate speeds. Shortly after we arrived, the tachometer stopped working. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the contact would be responsible for repair costs. She received a letter that stated there was a defect in the vehicle. By driving to slow, one can cause other drivers to erratically pass and zoom by you or driving to fast can cause other drivers to hurriedly get out of your way and cause accidents. The repairs would be at the owners expense.
I have a gps that tells me how fast I'm going so I can still drive it but something needs to be done before someone gets hurt or freaks out behind the wheel. At the time my vehicle only had about 6,500 miles. The speedometer reads accurately, and only recently the fuel gauge has been sticking. The dealer stated that they would assume the repair cost if the vehicle had 80,000 miles or less. I had 104,000 when the incident happened on my vehicle. Some sporadic attempts to work after but speedometer can easily be off by 30-40 mph. A failure here and there is understandable but when you have failures at this frequency going on it is obvious that it was under designed.
The vehicle had not been repaired. The mechanic stated that this is becoming a common occurrence with the 2004 Yukon and that this has not been recalled. If this causes an accident like what is going on now with ignition switch they will pay so much more with lawsuits. It appears to increase the reading as one increases in speed, but doesn't decrease the speed as one decreases their speed. About a month later I noticed that the speed odometer would say I was not moving at all that my speed was 0, and I would be driving at the time.
The contact was unaware of the correct speed that he was actually driving. I received no letters or recalls indicating a need to replace the cluster. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the speedometer failed. The contact stated that all the gauges on the instrument panel were no longer functional. Then in July of this year we were coming back from a family day trip and we were pulled over for speeding.
The speedometer is usually first like mine followed by the other gauges in the instrument panel as they are all driven by similar stepper motors. The vehicle was not repaired. I will be the first in line, can't tell you how many times I have ran off the road for lack of gas. Gm offering to stand behind only if it fails under 70k. I consider this a safety issue and it should not have a limit on mileage.
There is a recall on the instrument cluster for this for model year 2003-2006, but only up to 80,000. The contact stated he received an informational letter from the manufacturer in regards to the instrument cluster. I will schedule to have it looked at and then it will work fine for the next 3-6 months then it will screw up again for a couple of days. After researching online how to fix the problem I noticed hundreds of complaints about the same problem with the same vehicle. However, they would not repair the vehicle for free due to the mileage. The current mileage was 93,775 and the failure mileage was unknown.
I have not been able to fine any recall on this matter. The contact called the manufacturer and was informed that a class action law suit was filed, which would repair the speedometer up to 70,000 miles or seven years. The gasoline gauge functioned intermittently. I have no use of my dashboard at all. No use of oil gauge. The contacts vehicle had 79,000 miles. After only short amounts of driving, the speedometer will again start increasing its ready again.
The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. Works fine until sudden failure. I bought my truck used, and the warranty is no longer valid. Has anyone managed to find out if we can get this replaced via recall?. . Now when I drive the vehicle I am either go no speed at all or the speed odometer starts going crazy or gets stuck at 40mph.
If you turn off the truck and restart the engine, the speedometer will jump-back about 5 mph. A reasonable expectation is to have the speedometer and other gauges last the life of the vehicle. The dealer advised the dealer had extended the warranty for repairs to vehicle with less than 70,000 accrued miles. While idling, the speedometer will read 40 mph or jump from 40 mph to 100 mph. So if one does this 25 times, it will zero itself out. It possibly was acting up, but didn't completely fail until July 2009.
I have a friend who has an avalanche and her instrument panel is doing the same thing, her speedometer and tach are now malfunctioning. While driving at various speeds, the speedometer gave incorrect readings. He had not experienced a failure at the time. I have owned the vehicle since it was brand new. No use of anything on dash.
