Remove the exterior door handle rod by using an extra long thin flat head screw driver. The more it's used, the higher the interval rate goes up. What happens is the door cables in Ford Trucks F-150, F-250, F-350, Ranger and Ford Vans F-150, F-250, F-350 have plastic ends that keep the cables fastened in the door cable latches, and these ends corrode and break over time. You can also purchase a metal push on retainer from the local hardware store. Don't remove the whole thing just pull it leaving about half of it towards the front of the door stuck on. May not be the solution but just trying to help at this point. Remove the wire from the switch. Now taking the top latch off I got two of the three torques bolts out but the bottom one won't budge. In the link below they are shown as Item E With the window all the way down, carefully use a long flat tip screwdriver, to push down on the lever for the door latch mechanism, to open the door. No big deal, I know how to take the panels off now. Just let the rod dangle for now.
I still haven't replaced mine, the door rattles a bit, but it opens. Mine were just dirty and seem to be working fine now. For some reason this fixed it. When a person goes to open the door, they will lift up on the door handle and the door won't open because the plastic cable end is broken. Pulling at the panel carefully you may be able to get to the rod that releases the door.
I took the panels off and messed with the cables until they popped open. I am not able to open these either side to remove door panels, which I need to know how to remove door panels so I can see what I need to replace in order to fix these door so I will be able to open them. New lock assembly from junkyard or Ford. Working on a right door, looking at the locking fingers, facing the front of the rig, your screw driver would be inserted at the left side of the slit. Remove the exterior door lock rod by using a flat head screw driver to gently push down on the round spring loaded plastic catch. It, along with the various door hardware parts inside the door, needs to be lubricated at specific intervals. Pushing a flat screw driver into the slit will push the locking tab allowing the actuator to slide off the door latch.
The passenger side stopped opening right after I purchased it a few months back 168K miles. Unlock doors with the key. Try replacing the rivits with short screws. The crew cab models have the supports, the ext cab with suicide doors has more open unsupported space. Not being able to open the door, how do I get the door panel off to evaluate and fix? The door latch mechanism for your door is operated by rods, from the inside door handle, and the outside door handle. This rod is attached to a Bellcrank. Start lifting from end located at panel closest to the front of the rig. Now you have removed the 2 screws keeping it locked down. I haven't replaced them yet but need to as the other door just broke and it's a pain to load the kids up in there without the doors opend. Remove the two or is it three? Clean using a rag and electronic component cleaner. Can you feel and agffect of the actuator? A few screws and then the panel just lifts out.
If you're stuck on a hill with all 4 wheels spinning, lock the hubs and your gear ratio is far apart, your front wheels won't spin, and the front wheels will actually do the pulling. The door will come free from its slots. The Bellcrank in turn pulls down on another rod, which pulls down on a small lever in the door latch mechanism, to release the door latch. Remove door skin by grabbing the bottom and pushing upward, it should come right off. Remove small armrest section to the right of interior door handle, pop up with a screw driver. Test the door mechanism and locks before replacing the skin! Do the cables stretch, break, or what? Remove the switch by grabbing firmly and turn it until it is released. Rotate light socket 90 degrees and remove. There is a thermal limiting device that apparently loses its ability to function.
