It's much more effective than the usual characters that have passed as villains in recent paranormal films usually gray-skinned people with hair over their faces , and it never once becomes heavy-handed or preachy. John Cusack is brilliant as the cynical writer with a tragic past. It doesn't start out as a scary movie. We're never beaten over the head with the same thing; the film is always headed somewhere new and exciting.
