Marc Meyers and John Bergdorf provide us with a well scripted, acted, and directed look inside the life of an almost mythical serial killing monster, Jeffrey Dahmer. Luckily, the movie doesn't really seem to try to explain the inexplicable with obvious simplistic explainations divorce, misfit status. Adapted from the graphic novel of the same name which I also highly recommend , My Friend Dahmer focuses more on character development and suspense than blood or cheap scares. The film shows his awkward father impotently trying to reach his son; having read the father's memoir, my impression was that he was well-intentioned but too detached to really understand. No one becomes a necrophiliac cannibal because of a bad divorce, but sometimes people actually try to explain it away like that.
That's part of what made Ross Lynch's performance so excellent it was by any standards anyway. On the other hand, many people have said that Dahmer excelled in fooling people, especially authority figures. As it drives along, it passes some road kill on the street. The actor was excellent, the portrayal was a new and revealing angle of insight, and ultimately, I just can't stop watching it. However, the film does show that his environment probably cemented his decision to turn his back on humanity. I've seen other Dahmer documentaries, but I love the perspective of this movie. As others have said, not a gorefest and thankfully so. Now, before we get into the nitty-gritty of how you can watch 'My Friend Dahmer' right now, here are some finer points about the Attic Light Films, Aperture Entertainment, Ibid Filmworks drama flick. The film does show some of the progression into psychopathy that the documentary which I can't find and post here that discusses one of his early urges to sleep next to an unconscious man. In the end, the film excells in raising but not simplistically answering the two central questions we always have about people like Dahmer: What makes them the way they are and how can we tell who is normal and who is not? One significant point was that Dahmer was not only distressed by his budding homosexual urges, but his budding sadistic urges. It would've been good if the film showed that side of him ,the side that was able to talk to the police when he was literally in the middle of killing someone and to get off scot-free.
The bus driver sees him and tells him to sit back down. It's a skillful scene and necessary to distinguish his antics from just playfully infantile pranks and show them as desperate cries for attention and connection from someone who is fundamentally unable to connect. I actually found myself laughing during much of this film, because Dahmer and friends were into making comic spectacles of themselves. His teenage depression, his flat affect could be read as severe depression and the misery of an outcast, but it also registers as the dead eyes of an emotionally empty serial killer devoid of any normal human connections or feelings. Derf isn't so sure, and we see Derf narrowly escape becoming victim 1.
This film addresses the crucible that helped form the criminal instead. If we didn't know who it was, we could've watched this and seen a severely depressed young guy with some disturbing tendencies that we'd hope he'd outgrow. His mother was nuts and his father was completely clueless and unavailable. If you were ever wondering what Dahmer's childhood was like, this will give you a little insight. You can see that his loneliness and isolation literally when he's left alone in the house one weekend made the perfect environment for him to decide not to get any help but to give in to the impulses.
It shows Dahmer's Necrophilia begin to develop while he looks for, gathers, and collects dead animals. One thing that seemed obvious and could have changed things, was how his parents and friends didn't encourage him to become a biologist or pathologist, instead of destroying his interests. But this movie banks on our knowledge that these urges weren't outgrown, but ultimately flowered, so to speak, in the worst possible ways. Classmates in real life said he was perfect in his ability to appear respectable to teachers; the film merely emphasizes his prankster misfit mascot status and skips a pretty critical aspect of his psychopathy. Very well done, and Ross Lynch was amazing. Dahmer said later that therapy in prison didn't help him anyway, but maybe if he'd decided to get help at a crucial point, he could've at least reigned in the urges if not completely ridding himself of them.
