If your speedometer is jumpy or erratic this is usually the reason. Place the fitting hold into the groove of the fitting. Step 8: Install Reverse Gear Once the ring is seated fully in place, slide the reverse gear onto the mainshaft. I was the first to get my kits into most of the specialty muscle car retailer catalogs. You can see how much wider it is compared to the older style on the right. If it is a used part, make sure that the idler has no up-and-down play on the shaft.
Mainshaft Assembly Reassembling the mainshaft is pretty much a reverse of the disassembly procedure. Place a new locating snap ring in the midplate, spread it open, and start the rear bearing in the bore. If you are reusing a case with a stock bore, use 51813 Permatex to coat the front bore and rear of the shaft. Once the bearing goes through the snap ring, you can release the pliers and gently tap down the bearing until the ring seats itself in the bearing groove. Step 6: Tap Out Shifter Shaft Stud-type shifter shafts should have a nut put on them to aid in tapping them out.
B Needle Bearings in Side Cover The new Auto Gear side cover uses needle rollers in the side cover. Having all these subassemblies ready to go on the mainshaft helps to keep you organized. You can use a chisel to easily remove them. If the pin is really loose, replace the cover. Gear Inspection Step 1: Check for Aftermarket Gears All factory speed gears were coated with black phosphate left and had some sort of inspection dye on them. Step 2: Install Tailhousing on Midplate Placing it forward makes it easy to attach the fork to the reverse gear. Most older factory covers are extremely sloppy here.
You can see the coloration difference in an aftermarket gear right. Elongated bores cause leaks and geometry problems, which lead to poor shift feel and quality. The widened grooves cause excess geartrain movement. It was also a way of changing ratios. Sometimes the shaft may be stuck in the extension housing. Gears, Synchros and Shafts Low oil level is the most common cause of premature synchro wear, gear wear, and component failure. They just patch the leak.
You also need to be sure that the combs are straight. When it reaches the correct color, slide it into the correct position with a pair of pliers. I like to use lock washers even though the factory never used them. Remove forward or inside reverse idler and thrust washer. Step 4: Inspect Hub Splines When the sides of the hub splines are worn, it causes a shift to hang up because the slider is allowed to cock on the hub. Step 31: Take Out Shift Shaft Seals Use a small flathead screwdriver to remove the shift shaft seals in the side cover and tailhousing. This gear is in great shape but the cone has severe groove marks in it from the synchro ring.
If you are going to use paint use correct colors unless it is a street rod and it has a color theme. Use this method on every gasket surface on the transmission. Pull the shaft out and it packs the needles for you. You should always build units with upgraded matching hardened hubs and sliders. When trying to figure out a name for the site, I had a giant list of possibilities, but it was not by accident that BangShift was one of them. Most people think they are worn.
Step 13: Remove Input-Shaft Bearing Cage and Needle Bearings Remove the input-shaft bearing cage and lift out the 17 needles. If you are reusing your old cage, hold the needles in place with grease on the outside perimeter of the cage and gently push it into place. Latex gloves come apart with mineral spirits. Synchro rings crack at the key slots, flatten, and spin out of the keys. Muncie Rebuild Kit The most frequently replaced hard parts are shift forks, sliders, and the front retainer. Synchro Inspection Step 1: Inspect Synchro Rings Cracked or damaged synchro rings are easily spotted. The inputs and countergears never had these coatings.
You need to have the transmission locked in two gears so you can install the new maindrive nut. Step 2: Inspect Shaft Older shafts had a tendency to twist under severe load. Step 10: Install Retainer Gaskets Because several different replacement front bearing retainers are available, different-thickness gaskets are necessary. That is why newer 5-speeds are all the rage. Spacers running too tightly can jam up the needles. Once the pin fit is corrected, use a reamer in the shifter shaft bore to clean it up. Lots of transmissions have stripped threads in this section or oversized bolts and threads.
Boring it and installing a bushing is a common fix. Step 14: Install Mainshaft in Case Lower the mainshaft assembly into the case and hold the 3-4 slider in its half-forward position. The orientation of these parts is critical. If you are doing this for the first time, remember that there is a huge difference between a restoration and a plain rebuild. If the case was damaged from a gear explosion, the thrust washers are often jammed from debris.
