While living in Paris for several years trying to be a writer, he becomes obsessed with a woman he met by chance on a bus. With this movie, Polanski has obliterated the barriers of decency, and sometimes even makes you, the viewer, uncomfortable due to the goings on. While not as good as some of Polanski's other works, Bitter Moon still stands out as a highlight of his filmography and is certainly a lot better than many people have reputed it to be. Leaving Oscar's cabin, Nigel meets Mimi and they kiss. Oscar insists to tell his unsettling life story to Nigel, who is too polite to refuse although its gore content, shamelessly explicit details and foul Yankee language rather disgust the well-bred Brit, yet becomes also fascinated. Soon Oscar finds himself enslaved body and soul by her love, and continues to tell Nigel the details of this relationship in various stages over a number of visits to Oscar's cabin. His character in this film is the sort that actors can really get their teeth into, and Coyote bites down hard in this movie.

The themes on display are impressive, and in spite of the fact that it oversteps the mark on several occasions, Polanski's film always feels real and the lesson in the love that the film teaches is duly noted. Polanski's direction is excellent as usual and the gritty style mixed with the great director's edgy camera-work help to create a claustrophobic environment that allows Polanski to perfectly portray his characters' mindset. Having become paraplegic this way, Oscar had no choice but to let Mimi move in with him again and take care of him. The film follows two very different couples on a cruise ship; An English couple, Nigel and Fiona and an American cripple, Oscar, who is married to the French seductress Mimi. Nigel clumsily tries to woo Mimi, encouraged and coached by Oscar. He promised her a holiday in the Caribbean, but he got off the plane just before take off. During the New year's Eve party, things come to a surprisingly real and personal closure, not in the least for Nigel. Oscar tells how he found by chance in Mimi a willing partner for sex, ever pushing their boundaries.
Fiona tells him that Oscar had made her come to the party. Things come to a head at the party, when Fiona sees them dance together. After meeting Mimi in the ship's bar, Nigel becomes entranced by her and later meets her husband and proceeds to learn his and wife's story. They encounter a beautiful French woman, Mimi , and that night Nigel meets her while dancing alone in the ship's bar. The two women, played by Kristin Scott Thomas and Emmanuelle Seigner are well done in terms of the characters and the acting, but it is Peter Coyote who steals the show as the abominable Oscar. Nigel goes outside clutching a bottle of liquor and screams his frustration into the wind and waves. After two years of parties and one-night stands, he drunkenly stepped in front of a vehicle.
