To pull the headliner is probably about a 1000 times easier in it compared to a Jetta, but still. It failed to hold it in place, so i basically went with another type of glue, one that has to be stretched out using a flat tool and that did the job.

Baz yeah, i have bought a set of full cream recaro leathers with carpet, trim, headliner , everything i need to convert my drab black cloth to cream leather, but when i collect it i need to take out the headliner myself, he told me it was glued on but from what i can see its just held on by trim and clips etc, no glue. As far as alternate coverings go, I would say vinyl is too heavy for a spray can glue, but I have used vinyl and leather with professional glues no problem. These can be a bit tricky.
Not sure if you have a moonroof or not; if you do it may be more difficult. So if you have lots of patience for threading and your headliner is perforated already and you don't mind a loose headliner when done, that will work. We tossed the extra material but it was about a quarter inch or thicker. Even with the front seats in place, you'll have to bend the heck out of the headliner and there's a good chance you'll bend a line in it. The other will leave a huge mess trust me. Glue bled through the material and there was glue on the trim, grab handles etc.

Headliner replacement time is the easiest time to put in the rain sensor wiring and when the windshield is out it might be possible to get the headliner out through the windshield hole without removing all that stuff. Reach above it and disconnect the sunvisor plugs. It slowly tears apart any vehicle that has anything more than bare plastic finishing. Three people doing this is best. A thinner foam may show imperfections in the headliner board. I started the fabric on the edge, spraed some adhesive on it and the headliner, and worked the headliner a couple inches at a time so it was tight up against the cardboard backing. Also, the bolt can't be tightened since there's no anchor for it to screw into so you'll end up with the grab handle in your hand. If the sunroof drains are broken, it's easier to fish in new lines, otherwise the headliner also has to come out. Trim the excess from around the edges and use a razor blade to trim material out of all the holes. I expect sagging headliners on a car from the 80s, not mid 2000s.
