For an electric start, have an assistant crank the engine over several times; remember to have your ignition cutoff activated and the plug wire removed. I always get the parts fast and always the right ones. Loosen the in-line fuel filter hose clamps with a screwdriver and pull the filter free. They are always fast, friendly and cheaper! Unscrew the compression gauge hose and install the spark plug. A normal fuel pump will put out aproximately five to seven psi of pressure.
Use the pull rope or electric starter to crank the engine over. Install was pretty easy, just make sure you know what hose goes where. Take pictures as you go so you know how to put everything back together too. I have never had a outboard start so easily ever all the time. Unfortunately your specific model doesn't come with a fuel pump diaphragm kit and you would have to look on the fuel pump section of your model's diagrams and piece out everything you need from the kit individually.
Repair the compression problem first. Problem fixed: fuel pump I purchased a fuel pump kit from another supplier ebay and they had out of date kit without instructions. I should have went with Crowley in the first place. Check the compression reading in psi pounds per square inch on the gauge. The new unit had a different configuration for mixing gas and oil but all parts and instructions were in the new fuel pump assembly kit I purchased.
Repair Difficulty Medium Repair Time 30 to 60 mins I have purchased from Crowley Marine for years and I will continue. Problem fixed: Fuel pump was leaking fuel The original fuel pump was leaking fuel pretty bad. Pull your rope start with the other hand so the engine turns over at least four or five times. If the cylinder has a leak, the pump pulse signal will not be strong enough to send the proper amount of fuel to the cylinder. I filled the barrel full of water with the lower unit in it and was all ready to start it. Hook up a fuel pressure gauge to the pulse hose that comes out of the fuel pump. I called and talked to a gentleman forget his name , he looked up the correct part number for the kit for my engine, saw that the computer said 1 left, then he put me on-hold to verify the part was actually in-stock, grabbed it off the shelve, and immediately mailed it out.
Outboard fuel pumps rarely fail, and diagnosing a fuel problem involves checking other components that can be easily mistaken for a bad check valve or diaphragm in a fuel pump. Got it in 2 days! Problem fixed: Engine bogging down under load Had rebuilt carbs and fuel pump but still had the same issue. I did the complete power head change out in about 10 hours or so. Replace the fuel pump or purchase a rebuild kit. At this point, I just need to reconnect the electricals and will be seeing if she fires. If you have an electric start motor, have an assistant crank the engine over while pushing the throttle wide open.
Maybe you can buy each piece separately, to rebuild the pump. Pull the spark plug wire boot from the tip of the spark plug. Any reading below this will indicate a defective fuel pump check valve or diaphragm. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct psi your engine needs. Due to their seasonal use and small fuel tank volume, premature fuel pump failure is especially common in powersports platforms.
After a month or so of searching prices ,costs and so on I settled on buying one from Crowley Marine. Ok got the new long block installed , lower unit back on and was all proud of myself. End of story is do your home work and buy a long block. The outboard fuel pump has a sensitive diaphragm that receives a suction signal from a piston cylinder so the pump can deliver fuel. Twist your throttle position wide open with one hand.
Installed the new fuel pump assembly and problem was solved. Crowleys cost was a little more, but the kit was correct and there were instructions for the repair included. Fuel pumps on outboard motors work a little bit differently than they do on automobile engines. A process of elimination will narrow down a bad fuel pump. Loosen the clamp on the pulse hose, using a screwdriver. The part I ordered was 40. Use a plug socket and wrench to loosen and remove the spark plug.
And seasonal downtime in snow and motorcycle platforms can oftentimes lead to fuel tank varnishing, resulting in a seized fuel pump motor. Turn off your main electrical cutoff switch that governs motor ignition. Direct the plug wire away from the spark plug hole opening, wedging it or taping it to another component. It fixed my issue and the motor is now back on the ocean. The reason is simple, bottom line was customer service and satisfaction from their customers. Awesome is all I could say.
Having trouble finding your application? I will definitely purchase from Crowley Marine again. I could have bought cheaper including install but decided it against it for that reason also. If the compression falls below 30 psi, per specifications, your fuel pump will not function adequately due to low pulse pressure. Screw a compression gauge hose into the spark plug hole. Blow through both ends of the filter to ensure there are no obstructions.
