I am having this exact issue and am curious what to do. There's no way this is hardware, the power-option-command-shift buttons all work to quickly turn off the system. Well the second possibility is very unlikely because I have not spilled anything on the keyboard ever. The only key working was the power key. Took to seller and everything worked perfectly.
Why is it functioning like the keys between the numeric keypad and keyboard? Macbook keyboard not working issues with mouse and touchpad Are you worried about macbook keyboard not working issue? You can go to Apple Store to have it fixed, but it won't be a good way as the case may be easily damaged. First, I will rundown my issue so there will be no question as to what the issue was! Based on above comments, I hooked up an external keyboard and mouse, which worked! Open System Preferences and click on the Universal Access preference pane. I had the exact same problem. Everything is working fine again! The issue has been resolved at least temporarily, and the Diagnostics prove that. I tightened all the screws seated all the ribbon cables now it did not work at all even pressing hard. Thanks a lot for this man! Here is the procedure which solved the problem for me.
I just realise that cmd+c also stopped working for some reason. I was using an external keyboard due to the fact that my default MacBook Pro keyboard was damaged by water. You'd better prepare a spare battery or a wired keyboard in case that the keyboard runs out of power. Apple needs to address this publicly or in a software update. But remember never to add lots of heavy pressure when doing any of the above, otherwise the board could break so gentle is good.
Keyboard functions are the most basic of drivers and if those are malfunctioning, then something could very well be wrong with your operating system. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4. This faulty cable will affect the keyboard as well even though they are not connected. But because the keyboard is attached to the motherboard over the touchpad, the keyboard did not work as well. When I warmed the laptop, the trackpack and keyboard worked as normal again. After doing a complete restore things go back to normal but that only last 2 days. The machine was stationed on the desk.
Ultimately, all this affects the ability of both the keyboard and trackpad causing macbook air keyboard and trackpad not working issue. What's a bit more unsettling is that, in the System Preferences, it's not even recognizing a trackpad as being connected. One weird thing that I noticed is that the problem seems that it gets worse with time, before the restore, the trackpad and keypad doesn't work at all, but after the restore, both work intermittently until both reach a point where it doesn't respond at all. The design is poor in that there is no stress relief for the ribbon clamp when the kinks are subject to pressure. I repeated five time, submerging the mac every time, then drain and put in the oven at 40 C for 4 hours. What is lacking: acknowledgement of the the problem, and redress, on the part of Apple.
Update - 2 Not an insulation but pressure problem. My current theory is the trackpad cable being exposed, rather than under the battery in previous models, leads to these failures at a much higher rate than before. Delete all the files on your desktop 2. Sounds like the back plate is pressing on the stiff section of the ribbon, where the kinks are, just next to the ribbon clamp. Worked for me with minimal effort. What is strange is that the keyboard and trackpad do not work when the Macbook is on, but when I use the keyboard to boot into Single-user mode or Recovery mode or whatever, the keys that I use work just fine.
I've had a keyboard problem a year ago while trackpad worked. The setting could have been activated while syncing from a MobileMe account that had the preference enabled, migrating a user from another computer using Migration Assistant that had the preference enabled, or by pressing the Option key five times if that setting is enabled in System Preferences. Remember to turn on Bluetooth on your Mac and pair it with your keyboard. While I was replacing it, I noticed some crumbs had gotten inside, and there was a crumb sized dent in her old trackpad cable. I have seen lots of forums that talk about absolutely the same problem. It gradually became worse to every day and having to reboot the Mac to sometimes get it back, sometimes it worked, some times it did not.
You can find the combination of buttons to do that on their website can't remember off-hand. I had read a handful of times that this could be the issue. Came back home and problem continued. I also place to the sides making a bit of a channel where the cable runs some dense foam tape to help protect the cable. Started off by randomly losing my keypad and trackpak, mayby once a few weeks. Otherwise, it might lead to other internal damages turning into a greater issue. I had installed a windows partition on my mac using bootcamp so the mac booted into windows.

It started working on its own one day and stopped again. You take out the battery. After all I went through I would recommend a possible fix that could save you lots of time. Hope your keyboard works properly now and feel free to drop us a comment if you have any further questions or ideas to share with us. The power button is on its right side, and the slot to replace battery is on the left side.
Take it out and quickly turn it on, see if the keyboard and track pad are working. I get 7 files, move it outside that folder and it works. As unbelievable as this may sound i had the same issue with my keyboard not working on my 2018 macbook pro. I opened it and saw fresh milk! It worked fine, until after awhile, I turned on my Mac to then use the built-in keyboard and trackpad both were not working. I ordered a new flex cable on the internet. I assume an internal connection has come appart but I don't want to open it up as I am not perticularly experienced in these maters.
