On the other hand, Lord of Illusions fails to work as horror either. This sound-and-light show went on just a shade too long for my taste, but it was well-mounted, and horror fans will get their money's worth. One of the best scenes in the movie involves a new illusion that Swann unveils before the black tie audience; he's shackled to a revolving wheel beneath another wheel from which many swords hang suspended, each one over a vital part of his anatomy. The trick does not work, and Swann dies a grisly death, one extremity or vital organ at a time. Scott Bakula, who was then caught in a career lull between his leading parts on genre tv series Quantum Leap 1989-92 and Enterprise 2001-5.
Routine stuff — average for every direct-to-video horror film these days. Suspecting a ruse, D'Amour opens Swann's coffin and finds that the body inside is fake. It fails to work as a film noir detective story. Harry discovers that the nutjob has been torturing Quaid, one of the group that defeated Nix all those years before. Hellraiser was a highly impressive directorial debut from Barker, a dark and gripping descent into forbidden desire that created a pantheon of memorable monsters and was all the more impressive for only having been made on a one million dollar budget.
The kidnapped girl shoots Nix through the heart with Swann's gun. In the meantime Swann is advanced to a popular illusionist like David Copperfield and is married to the charming Dorothea. You suspect that what Barker was really wanting to make was something like. Later, at Swann's house, Dorothea reveals that she was the girl that Nix kidnapped, and that she married Swann because of a sense of obligation. D'Amour convinces the emotionally hurt Swann to help him put an end to Nix's cult.
Considering that some five makeup studios have been brought on board to essentially only give Daniel Von Bargen a leprously black face, the results are considerably underwhelming. Swann turns out not to be dead and uses his last life energy and magic to help D'Amour deliver a final blow to Nix, who falls into the hole, which is shown to have no bottom. O'Connor - There Will be Blood , a wealthy illusionist who has found fame by disguising real magic as stage trickery, and believes that her husband may be in danger. For one, Clive Barker casts Scott Bakula. They cut most of the beginning of the film, which has some of the best scenes and establishes who Nix is and what he can do. When I first saw this film over 23 years ago, I like it in spite of some of its uglier elements.
But Swann's apparent death on-stage complicates the case, as does the growing passion between D'Amour and Dorothea. Harry's investigation ends up being a bit anti-climatic because of this and the film might have worked better unveiling the past latter on in the story. Dorothea holds Swann in her arms as he succumbs to his injuries. The film also stars Famke Janssen as Dorthea, Swann's wife who hires D'Amour. Nix then begins to transform into a hideous creature. The most surprising thing about this is that how normal it is even if theres all these crazy special effects going on.
The brutal elements are still there, but what really shines is the humanity of our characters and the brilliant interactions between them. She hires D'Amour to protect Swann against the evil cult members. Harry reluctantly agrees to investigate, and he discovers that Swann has made enemies of a bizarre religious cult who wish to resurrect their leader, an evil sorcerer killed by Swann. This was Clive Barker's last stab at directing so far , but I always liked the way he presented his characters and Daniel Von Bargen is simply terrifying as the revived leader of a Manson-like cult who actually has supernatural magic powers. The director's cut still isn't as good as Hellraiser, but is much closer to the quality of those films and has some good moments. Koontz, to have given King a challenge in the best-seller stakes.
