If a warlord is killed they can be replaced, perhaps by a son who starts with the Blood Feud trait against the warband that slew his father! There is some good stuff, so probably I'll also look at the second book, but there is also a lot to improve. Actually, as a reader, you can get many lessons of life. This character shows great maturity for someone so young. The only issue I would have is pacing of timeline. I like the main character, Treace- a boy who lost his father and that is still a mystery as to why- he has a kind heart, a head for learning, and the desire to do well in all things. Treace, bullied and belittled, is unaware of the plan his deceased father has for him.
Pagan Rus are an Eastern faction so will never meet up with the Strathclyde Welsh for example. So much internal debate over things that really, really aren't important. Treace is sent into enemy territory to find the key to unlocking more powerful magic that could help save thousands of lives. If you can clarify, I may be able to help. Special rules are also randomly determined and appear to borrow heavily from the rules given to existing Heroes of the Viking Age eg.
Onneron is no longer at peace. Ahh I picked this book out on a whim. But these are minor quibbles really and Age of the Wolf is a solid supplement to a well established and much enjoyed game. I like the main character-Treace. I think when the group was sitting around out in the woods without posting a guard or watch, knowing that taking the main road would get them captured, and get caught with 'their pants down', is when I just couldn't read anymore. Starting warbands begin with 2 points of each resource and may acquire or lose! I've rarely seen such wooden and stilted dialogue in all my time reading. They wish to remain independent, but the Onneron Church feels threatened by their ability to heal and vies to take control of their order.
The epic adventure continues with the third book in the Saga of The Wolf series, Path of Fire. I want to read what comes next in this series. It still happens fairly quickly for his level of mastery, but at least it wasn't like some books where it comes without work. Perhaps powerful warlords could instead recruit a random priest? I have been waiting on this book since the release of Path of The Calm. Of course players can tweak it to use with C and C, but I was going specifically for a Viking Age flavour.

I honestly enjoyed reading the first book in the Saga of the Wolf, and would recommend it to others. I want others to experience this world that the author has provided, as well as the characters that are given life.
The young world of Onneron has known peace for years. The story does get dark at times, which would make this an intense read for younger audiences. There are rifts within the College and the Church. For example, a warband can start with a maximum of two points of warriors with the remaining two points chosen from either levy or hearthguards. More powerful warlords can gain campaign points just for realising their motivations, even if they lose a battle.
It explores the bonds of friendship, deception, life lessons, love, swordplay, and magic. The winner also receives a campaign point. I felt like the story was good. First I wish I could pre order the next book, it's really that good. The PoV switches every other chapter, making it difficult to immerse yourself into the story. It's very obvious that an awful lot of thought has gone into creating the campaign system. It basically has the main thing i look for which, trite as it is, the 'young kids trains to become a badass' storyline. Haven prepares for the inevitable war by building defenses and training those that are ready to fight. Of course she's also betrothed to his bully. He said it will be out sometime in 2016.
At least that's a specialty focus with a smaller sample size of items. Also is a orphan who captures the attention of the prettiest girl in the village. There are just so many bad decisions in the first half of Path of Tears that made me second guess what I had read before. Of course, mercenaries only stick around for the game they were hired to fight in. Both factions need to adapt to the ever-changing world and find their new place within it.
