In the case of the 25 key model, it makes the advent of a highly portable rucksack studio a very feasible reality. Komplete Kontrol gets a similar overhaul. So I can load up Waverazor and discover that Kontrol has perfectly acquired all the right parameters. Plus Preview works with them. In terms of controller keyboards, there are stacks to go for. After five minutes we loved it.
The first Komplete Kontrol showed potential, but I could never quite justify its existence. The light guide is also used for mapping instrument splits on the keyboard. Yeah, they seem fixed but I've never thought of it as a problem for me as they're categorised by type and stack four across so there's not a great deal of scrolling to do depending on how many libraries you have of course. But now, you can choose the right control tool for the job. The software instruments, therefore, come alive as not only preset selection is made easier but also editing, mapping, tuning and performance, all done via hardware, so negating a lot of — but not all of — your mouse clicks.
Apparently people complained about the lack of dedicated wheels on the original keyboard, so Native decided to put the moaners in their place. Instead of searching through each plugin for a specific sound you can browse all your 'bass' tones at once. However, these are only permanent for this preset saved in your user library. The Hardware The Native Instruments S61 has been out for quite some time and indeed there is now a Mk2 version that should be in the stores soon however I had personally never used one of these controllers so I thought it would be interesting to give it a try and perhaps compare with the Akai Advance 49 which I also had here for a while. It is pricey — a full £300 more than the 61 — but the keys will be attractive to proper players.
