At the end we get not one, but two creepy twists: one is that our sleazy detective and the missing singer are one and the same guy, and the second twist. The idea that sexual frustration caused a split personality that was a homicidal maniac. We guess, as is often the case in life, the answer can be chalked up to superhuman lesbian strength and teleportation abilities. Honestly, it's not that hard to reveal the problems inherent to the Texas judicial system, where blacks are more likely to be executed than whites, where real innocent men have been executed in the past twenty years. Uh - no it didn't! Turns out that our reluctant hero has killed two low-level mafiosos, and now their boss wants to find out what happened. The first and the last scene also leave it to interpretation what actually happened in the reality. How do you explain that? Clearly the high-speed lifestyle of working in a high-end kitchen created a pretty negative environment and bled into his home life, but him shifting gears and getting a food truck seems like a bit of a silly reason to suddenly have your ex take you back. I'm not really doing this twist justice, but it blew me away when I saw it back in '87. But that's sort of what makes Neil Jordan's The Crying Game such a unique and memorable piece of filmmaking. Or he was on Earth all along.
It was incredibly tense, well-filmed and acted, and was pretty refreshing. I've tried to hold an intelligent, respectful conversation with you. The ending: The mirror tricks Tim into releasing the anchor to destroy it - unfortunately Kayleigh is stood in the way and the weight goes straight through the back of her head. But Angel Heart still holds up as a dark, moody, and highly effective mystery story. Note: I have yet to meet one person who doesn't like this movie. More at home with early 90s Saturday morning cartoons than a Star Wars trilogy, this ending should have been proof enough that George Lucas should never have been allowed near the prequels.
