Just a genuinely loopy character that added real charm to this movie. One of Paulie's thumbs is severed as punishment. Let's stay with what we know here. Mickey Rourke at his youthful zenith and Eric Roberts in a performance that should have led him to super stardom. When the young gangster gets into deep trouble, the other must reevaluate his goals and his true feelings about his family. This movie is not really about anything except behavior, and the only human drama in it is the story of the safecracker and his family. But the tip-off is the last shot, where the boys have a happy-go-lucky walk down the street and into a freeze frame, while Sinatra is trotted out for his third encore.
Apart from the acting, this movie has very little to recommend it. He was following writer's and director's direction for goodness sake!!! They are walking tall, looking cool, keeping face and are aimless and drifting. Ross April 2019 Absolute classic! Bed Bug Eddie The Pope of Greenwich Village bills itself as a drama and is structured like a crime thriller, but I categorize it as basically a Behavior Movie. Think of it another way, had Roberts not been in this movie, come up with another actor from then or even now who could have played that part better. One of these will bust a block of concrete : Does it work fast? I mean you don't abuse 'em once in a while they'll shit all over you.
Ed Norton plays one in 'Rounders', Geena Davis plays one in 'Thelma and Louise'. Little works in this contrived mess, but by far the worst aspect of it is Roberts' over-the-top histrionics. Eric has always taken chances with his characters, and the fact that he has never taken himself too seriously as given him free reign. The behavior is well-observed, although Eric Roberts has a tendency to go over the top in his mannered performance, and the last two scenes are highly unlikely. While waiting for his beautiful lawyer-turned-accomplice Kelly Lynch to arrive, Bosworths smile soon explodes into homicidal rage when the Cornells desperately try to fight back. He can no longer support his girlfriend, a long-limbed, blond aerobics instructor who seems attracted to his exotic ethnic charm.
Erics performance was absolutely embarrassing in this movie. And Mickey Rourke was spot on. The cast is excellent and even if you know the film via Bogie it's great to is Rourke swing from being what seems nice to being a cold blooded killer. Not for nothin', Jimmy, but my mother sent me over a hunk of mozzarella from your place last week, it was no big bargain. Both of them want to leave the poverty of ghetto life, but each takes a dramatically different route when one of them joins the mob and the other accidentally impregnates his girlfriend.

Set in New York in the late 1970's-early 1980's, it opens with our hearing Sinatra sing, 'A Summer Wind', which sets the mood and tone perfectly. I couldn't think of anyone else who could have played that role, certainly not as well as Eric Roberts. The safe belongs to the Mafia godfather of Greenwich Village, and if he finds out who did it, not even Paulie's uncle in the Mafia can save them. Plus, all the loose ends. The film was adapted by screenwriter Vincent Patrick from his novel of the same name. That doesn't mean it's not worth seeing. Actually a pretty realistic interpretation of an Italian character of that ilk.
