Kill every single minor faction in sight for bonus dust so you can research a few starting techs. After playing a game with them, I'd like to say that they're a very interesting faction to play with! I tried to play them industry-focused, and failed. Same for Forgotten and their options. If players are actively encouraged to fight over something, then they should all, equally, have a reason to fight over it.
The same goes for spying. You will need heroes which provide additional health to the army, such as trait which gives 10,10,25 health, or even better, the drakken heroes which can make any unit into a massive tank. Use unit equipment, abilities and the terrain to overcome your opponents. Assimilate powerful minor factions and use their special traits and units wisely.

Pillaging is worth only with the forgotten, its pretty op when in war or when you are clearly stronger than the other faction. Honestly, I was running armies with 8 assassins, and a few others with 4 mysts scouts. It will be necessary to confront them, defy them, and understand the new powers they harness.
