I had a like problem flashed F ,and locked up in 10th gear ,stopped and disconnected main power to the batteries for about 20-30 mins then hooked power back up and it was fine until,I got over to lincoln,ne and started giving me problems. After five seconds, the gear display begins flashing two-digit fault codes. What usually happens is the sensor will crack and eventually break, normally logging a fault code 58. When it's stuck in gear I pull over and let it sit for a while then the truck will reset and it will start and drive fine for a while. This could be caused by a misadjusted clutch or a faulty clutch or clutch linkage. Never had too many problems with Standard Transmission.
And the N value is your not going any where. This may have to be done several times before the transmission learns. If there are no active codes the gear display will show code 25. AutoShift can activate the engine brake to make shifts faster. It then shows N and then flashes F.

Other times it gets stuck and won't reset even after disconnecting the batteries!! A loose tone wheel will also give incorrect readings for the sensor. If you break it off and one half is still stuck in the case, use a large tap and thread it into the sensor and you should be able to pull it out.
