The band's last night at The Hollywood was April 4, due to a fire on April 5. Duke was handsome, elegant, and well-mannered. Fats Waller played when the band was on breaks. In September 1923, The Washingtonians under Elmer Snowden began an engagement at the Hollywood Club in New York. He died in 1974, a few months after Ellington. Decca bought the rights to the catalogue around this time, and reactivated the label in mid-1935 for about a year.
The variety and ingenuity of these works, all conceived for three-minute, 78-rpm records, are extraordinary, as are their unique forms, which range from logically flowing expositions to of line and mood. The label only appeared for a short time in the mid-1920s. The most comprehensive source for Ellington's early work are the Classics releases, although that series omits alternate takes, which may be found in other collections. One of the originators of , Ellington led his for more than half a century, composed thousands of scores, and created one of the most distinctive ensemble sounds in all of. Both recording sessions were at the Brunswick studio, but New Desor identifies the earlier one as a Vocalion session.
In November 1924, Ellington backed vocalist on matrix T2001-1 and backed Ms Prime and Sonny Greer on matrix T2002-2 on Blu Disc 1007. There is no Ellington recording on the flip-side. After the band went home, Ellington and Greer went from table to table, using a studio piano on wheels, playing for tips, and made a lot that way. In December 1930, the Gennett Electrobeam label was withdrawn but the Champion and Superior labels continued, made from Gennett masters with pseudonyms replacing the artists' names. He suggests the title East St. Prince Robinson joined the band by May, and Fred Guy replaced George Francis. He adapted his style for orchestral purposes, accompanying with vivid harmonic colours and, especially in later years, offering swinging solos with angular melodies.
This hand-written not stamped information doesn't appear on other 78 issues, which were pressed from stampers from which the centers bearing this information had been milled out so-called sunken-label pressings unlike pressings on the Everybodys label, which are unmilled flush-label pressings. It was followed by, among others, Liberian Suite 1947 ; A Drum Is a Woman 1956 , created for a television production; Such Sweet Thunder 1957 , impressions of scenes and characters; a recomposed, reorchestrated version of Nutcracker Suite 1960; after Peter Tchaikovsky ; Far East Suite 1964 ; and Togo Brava Suite 1971. He composed a series of works to highlight the special talents of his soloists. The revue toured Europe for two years, and Deacon Jazz is known to have been sung by Adelaide Hall and a chorus in Europe. MacHare lists the same personnel for the March date. Mark Tucker writes that this is Ellington's first instrumentally conceived composition to appear on disc, and it was neither copyrighted or published. The principal aim of this site is to provide as full an on-line discography of the recorded Works of Duke Ellington as possible. Where it has been impossible to contact the authors or their estates or defunct publications for permission to publish on the web, it is to be hoped that they will view the re-publication as an acknowledgement of their worth as historical commentary. On July 26, 1923 Elmer Snowden's Novelty Orchestra Arthur Whetsel, Otto Hardwick, Duke Ellington, Elmer Snowden and Sonny Greer, Drums recorded Home for Victor, but the record was not issued. The band spent a week in Massachusetts beginning Easter Sunday April 20 , appearing at the Waldorf Theatre Lynn , the Charlehurst Ballroom Salem playing as Duke Ellington's Broadway Recording Orchestra for The Young Men's Christian Temperance Society , Truell Hall Lawrence , Associate Hall Lowell , College Inn Salem and Associate Hall Lowell. The original label was quite plain with an octagonal design, but soon the familiar design later used on English Perfect labels was introduced. New York bandleader Wilbur Sweatman hired Sonny Greer from Washington to play drums, but Greer would only go if Sweatman also hired his friends Ellington and Otto Hardwick. The solos are by Charlie Irvis trombone and Pike Davis trumpet. His gift of melody and his mastery of sonic textures, rhythms, and compositional forms translated his often subtle, often complex perceptions into a body of music unequaled in jazz history.
This project began on 1 January 2010 and the discography section is now complete. There were some exceptions to this generalization, such as trumpeter-violinist Ray Nance and high-note trumpet specialist Cat Anderson. An elegant man, Ellington maintained a regal manner as he led the band and charmed audiences with his suave humour. During 1939—67 Strayhorn so closely with Ellington that jazz scholars may never determine how much the gifted deputy influenced or even composed works attributed to Ellington. Its catalog seems to begin and end in the month of December 1924. The expertise of this ensemble allowed Ellington to break away from the conventions of band-section. It returned to the renovated club, renamed Club Kentucky, in the spring. With these exceptional musicians, who remained with him throughout the 1930s, Ellington made hundreds of recordings, appeared in films and on radio, and toured Europe in 1933 and 1939.

Red label pressings label name Blu-Disc dated from 1924 and are extremely rare and valuable. Tenor saxophonist and bassist , both major jazz artists, were with this classic Ellington band. Duke Ellington was no exception and this compilation of quotes pays tribute to some of the philosophical and idealogical quotes from one of the twentieth centuries greatest composers. The may need to be rewritten. I have examined the issues on Broadway, Triangle and Pennington, and all are stamped T 2006-2; the copy of Blu-Disc T1002 held in the Valburn collection at the Library of Congress is also stamped T 2006-2, yet my copy of this rare issue is stamped T 2006-1.
