The owner on the '97 truck will need a transmission from a '97 or newer truck that is compatible with his year model. If all seems right and he feels comfortable with buying it, I imagine we'll make the deal. These two factors are what drove to put an Allison in a 2001 Cummins with a five-speed stick. No matter what engine you have, these wide ratio changes result in poorer fuel economy, and require the engine to work harder when pulling heavy loads.

Gas versions may have cheaper planetaries and other hard parts in them so don't use one behind a high performance diesel without first sending it to a reputable transmission builder. Unfortunately the spacing between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears is a bit too close for it to be ideal, so it's not much different than the 4R100 as far as gearing goes. Then there is short shaft vs long shaft 4x4 and the same for 2wd. The best way to make the right decision is to become educated based upon your needs. Some stand alone options may be better than others, so do your homework.
