Just ignore the critics and find out for yourself by renting this awesome, albeit unrealistic, film. Smooth runs a stable of four girls. This is a very fun movie as it was meant to be. Part of that is because of the studied precision of , in the title role. Plus it's not like the guy's any sort of leading man; his best moments come when working alongside folks like Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, or Chevy Chase, or when he's given a really juicy supporting role. And now that I'm old enough to notice such things, I cannot forgive the flick for its drab direction, its ceaselessly unamusing premise, and a screenplay that borders on worthless.
It's sort of a United Nations: one Oriental, one black, etc. Odd that their combined efforts would yield such a resoundingly laugh-free spectacle, but we can perhaps attribute some of Doctor Detroit's ineffectiveness to director Michael Pressman. At first there is no Doctor Detroit, but eventually, through developments that are at once too obvious and too convoluted to explain, Clifford Skridlow metamorphosis into the dreaded doctor. Mix this up with some pretty girls, some chases and lots of chances to embarrass fuddy-duddies and play with fire extinguishers, and you'd have a Jerry Lewis movie that the French would write a book about. As a child I thought the girls in the film were gorgeous, little could I have imagined that one day Fran annoying voice Drescher would be starring in a hit television series. Because, and this is me being kind, Doctor Detroit has not exactly aged all that well. A real joy if you can actually find it at your local video store. As much as I still dig the Aykroyd, I find myself somewhat amazed that his career survived movies like this one and Caddyshack 2. They're too busy playing parts in the sitcom. Cop 1 as Frank G. Instead of giving us a standard mope and, later, a standard berserk maniac , he adds all sorts of little character touches that help the whole movie rise above its production-line origins. All in all this movie is great for pure entertainment purposes only. In my memory banks it was a fairly funny little sex farce, but now that I just forced myself to sit through this massive chore of a comedy with fresh eyes, I have to strike the flick from my Guilty Pleasures list forever. .
Here was a man who went from nothing to all out pimp although he had trouble admitting it in less that 24 hours. Aykroyd's best work comes when he's being earnestly nerdy Ghostbusters , dangerously deadpan The Blues Brothers , pompously authoritative his performance in Dragnet is reason enough to suffer through the thing , or a combination thereof Grosse Pointe Blank. But when the Doctor persona comes out to play, the result is pretty damn embarrassing, not only for Mr. The movie intercuts his obsessive lifestyle with another one, that of Smooth Walker , one of the more unlikely Chicago pimps to come out of the movies in many a year. Nothing too fancy here, folks, but good enough to warrant a listen.
If there's a role that demands a comedian who can successfully dress up in a bunch of goofy costumes and deliver the wacky, I can think of a dozen guys I'd hire before Dan Aykroyd. It begins with the portrait of an eccentric, mild-mannered mope who leads a life of quiet desperation. Players Ball Dancer as Clyde Barrett. You seen one movie set go up for grabs, you seen them all. Enter a mob of colorful Chicago criminals, who change the mope's life forever, furnishing him with an alternate identity and a whole new outlook on life. Detroit as a being the baddest dude around. He's not strolling, he's involved in one of those heel-and-toe Olympic walking patterns that require all sorts of special footwear and goggles and stopwatches; he looks like a fire sale at Land's End.

My being a huge 'A-team' fan at the time, I instantly looked at Dr. Dan Aykroyd is not Jim Carrey -- although I doubt that even Mr. I was about 9 years old when my mom brought this gem home for me to watch while on a sick day from elementary school. Now, if you've ever read my reviews of titles like Stripes, The Jerk, or The Blues Brothers, then you're already well aware of my oft-acknowledged affection for comedies of this era. If it was release between 1978 and 1985, if it was a comedy, and if it featured anyone with the names Martin, Murray, Belushi, Chase, or Aykroyd, I've seen it. Literally everything in the film is cheap-looking, chintzy, and bland. He plays Clifford Skridlow, nutty academic, physical culture buff, son of a university president and archetypal Lonely Guy.
