My one main criticism with African Cats, unfortunately, is the narration by Samuel L. Song of the Day: one of my favorite cartoons. I love Jackson as an actor, but he does not make a great narrator. They wanted more action or more story or more…something. I found the stories of both families to be captivating and their actions and behaviors startlingly similar to humans. The cameras get whisker-close to the Maasai Mara wildlife, where big cats cross paths with moody buffalo and sassy ostrich.
I had actually had the chance to see the movie previously, so when I was offered an additional screening, I jumped at the chance to take my kids. While anyone can enjoy this nature doc, cat lovers are especially in for a treat. Another thing I constantly thought about while watching was the ethical issues of nature docs. It was a beautiful film and shooting early morning and late evening made it even more so. I wouldn't sit through this film a second time and I probably would have found something similar on the National Geographic, Animal Planet or Discovery channels, but I just can't give this documentary a negative review. I mention this because I was little, just a bit, disappointed in the projection. Jackson is on board as the narrator of the film as he tells us the story of two separate families of cats and their struggle for survival. Also, I saw the movie in a digital projection theater. Synopsis An epic true story set against the backdrop of one of the wildest places on Earth, African Cats captures the real-life love, humor and determination of the majestic kings of the savanna.
