In many cases the horror-horror is secondary to the family conflict that is the emotional fulcrum of the film. At the risk of giving out spoilers, I won't go into the details. Curse Of The Witching Tree is difficult to watch, not least because its just so awful. I really enjoyed this movie.
I'm not sure where to start. They have no help in the house, which is fine but somehow these 3 manage to get everything done whilst 2 go to school and college and God knows what the mother does. In particular the pair of sisters played by Lydia Thorpe and Caroline Boulton. The content is bearing less and to a great extent vast. But come on, if someone told me not to believe 'what they say about isobelle' when I buy a house, I would ask a bit more than 'what' and be done.
We all love a good spooky tale about witches and ghosts. Not to mention the oh so charming nurse telling the daughter not to get her hopes up. I particularly enjoyed the scare when spooks appeared which was at times really shocking. Oh no, I got it wrong, it was the terrible script and barrage of copyright infringements. What was all that about? The scariest part of this movie, was the fact that at the advertised 90 minute mark it didn't end! Actors are there to act, not overact. From my professional experience, someone in a comatose state, especially that age, should at least be attached to some monitoring equipment, and have access to some suction, oxygen, and have safety barriers attached to the bed. It went on for another 3 minutes.
The story is beyond preposterous, the characters ludicrous, especially the moody teenage girl and 'tearaway' young lad. Good old Steve McQueen is great in the lead role going through one of the utterly worst ordeals almost possible, while the direction and editing is fluent; it never drags once in its 2 and a half hours runtime. We bought this as a Friday night pizza and beer type film designed to be cheap fun. As the film moves towards its conclusion, perfectly paced and ingeniously built up, there is a feeling of helplessness, Nothing is going to stop this curse and the family are destined to suffer more loss and more pain. I rate 'Curse of the Witching Tree' at 3.
Description An innocent woman, accused of murdering her son and hanged as a witch, curses a tree and the children who play around it. At least I had enough time to do some dishes and laundry. The plot is not extremely original, but I like the take that they have taken on the old revenge ghost story. Jake is played by young actor, Lawrence Weller in his debut on screen performance. They couldn't even be bothered to find a decent tree, which is supposed to be central to the whole story! And not in a good way.
Like I said, its ambitious, you can tell the filmmakers were ambitious. The whole thing is shot in what appears to be a lovely country house but whomever actually owns it probably one of the producers, director or 'mate of' has obviously blown all their money purchasing or renting the property because inside the refurbishment is as poor as the acting. James Crow has delivered a film that is all about the slow build and by sparing any obvious denouement until the end the effect is tremendous. So all in all its a pretty disastrous effort from the writer director. I had to stop watching after 60 minutes because it was just plain silly and annoying. Let's just say that this is a poor man's Amityville Horror or The Shining or.
Don't get me wrong, i'm British and i like nothing more than watching a home-grown movie. Save your time, see another movie. Was no research done to try and bolster the attempts to make any of this more believable, was he in a coma, or taking a nap? The acting is below par, and the casting is very questionable, why on earth is the mother just four years older than her daughter in real life? The film ends with a weird seance and a mad woman who cries blood. So they buy a creepy house in the countryside and bad things happen. But, to an extent, they did their job - I was suckered into watching the movie, and I daresay I wasn't the only one. If you enjoy slow British haunted house movies, like I do, then this is a cool little film.
Curse Of The Witching Tree also boasts one of the best casts that I have ever had the pleasure to watch, not just because of the unbelievable level of talent on display but also the way they act as an ensemble. But I can't recommend it to civilians without qualifying it as a slow paced British manor horror. And the editing is absolutely laughable, probably the worst aspect of the whole sorry enterprise. I had heard Danielle Lineker boasting about being in the film as she classes herself as an actress. It actually made for quite an entertaining ninety minutes or so, as we sat there laughing as one pointless cliché followed another in this procession of over-acted, poorly scripted dross. What a performance and my God but this boy can act! Mere gasps at times if it were real warranted a substantial scream at the very least.
Really, there is not one original frame in this flick. I laughed, I cried and I was scared. It's a shame the acting is so bad. The kids are pretty good, but there is this overtly sexual tone that is not there other than to score votes and maybe titillate the director. Owing to its classic status is due in parts to the fact that it is so well made and wonderfully acted. In the case of this film the darn woman turned out to be a witch after all and now all the rest of us are going to pay for it as she unleashes all kinds of hell on the children that play around the tree she was hanged from.
