Sony already has a good editing app in it's Vegas Pro software, so why this new addition? I borrowed some S-Log2 footage from a friend so I could really put Catalyst Prepare through its paces. View See the details of each clip, check focus, mark in and out points, adjust colors, and edit metadata. I mention it because I found it so wonderfully simple. View clips as thumbnails, or as lists with associated metadata. It does that extremely well, but it wouldn't take much to get Edit to a point where it could stand by itself. Sony has put a lot of thought into they way audio is handled. The main event takes place in the edit tab, where you can make changes to one video at a time. Bummer yes, but Sony is aware, and Prepare certainly is supporting ProRes.
The Suite comes in two parts: Catalyst Prepare and Catalyst Edit. Prepare has been a valuable resource for my own work with Sony footage, whether from dedicated video cameras or mirrorless cameras. I have been using Edit Ready. Sony claims better integration in the 2016. With advanced debugging tools for pre-processing and editing capabilities, it shortens the road from camera to the final product without sacrificing quality. The latest application to move to subscription is the Sony Catalyst Production Suite applications. Full-range color is also supported for external-monitor preview.

Edit was not sold in a standalone version, nor will it be able to be licensed outside of the bundle. All formats can be mixed and matched when building a storyboard. In fact, you can have both programs open at the same time on your system, and drag clips directly from Prepare into Edit. We imported clips from a variety of different lighting conditions to see how the program can balance the shots. If you need another type of transition like a wipe or a additive dissolve, then it is more like other programs. If I were writing a review for the popular online e-commerce retailer, I would definitely rate it five stars! This is a great tool for the director or producer in the field to begin the post-production process. However, that is your original material that you will wipe from the media card, so having Checksum verification is a nice option. I should point out a couple of quirks I've discovered. You can drag clips directly from the Catalyst prepare into Edit, and they retain the color adjustments you made to them. I'm also happy to find that the Inspector pane is not just an info source, but is also an interactive dialog box that allows you to rename clips on the timeline while maintaining the original file name. Effects and Plug-Ins There is no way to remove the color effects applied in Catalyst Prepare, nor to make adjustments to them. I do wish there were, but all is not lost.
