This is the very show so wonderfully and artfully detailed by filmmaker in his documentary on the project that reunited these then-obscure Cuban music legends for an album and a tour and catapulted them to worldwide fame. There is also footage from concerts in Amsterdam and New York City's Carnegie Hall. In this film, we see and hear some of the songs being recorded in Havana. Ry Cooder, you are a longtime favorite musician of mine- 'Paradise and Lunch' is in my top five favorite albums of all time, and you really outdid yourself with this collection! The 20 page booklet is very nice with information on the recording of each song included. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed.
Don't misunderstand my admiration for Cooder's past work. A man that spoke no English was trying to show me some of the best headstones there for a tip. Die Musik ist wirklich spitze. This 1998 Grammy winner was the first and greatest of the traditional Cuban Café recordings to receive worldwide airplay and recognition. The spindle holes are cut out nicely and there is no resistance when putting on the turntable for the first time.
Then there's the music, which speaks for itself. Of the four older legends, those who had made music together in Cuba before Castro, only remains on the Earth, and she is still quite active. This album represents the best in Cuban music: son cubano, guajira, bolero, danzón, criolla, and descarga.
The included book with stories of the music and lyrics is a really nice bonus with music in a language foreign to me. We were lucky to visit Havana, Cuba two months ago and I made of point to visit the gravesite of Ibrahim Ferrer, one of the principal musicians here! It is true that eight of the songs that appeared on the eponymous studio album are replicated here, but these live versions blow them away. The records I received were very high quality pressings, and the presentation is gorgeous. The finish is matte instead of gloss, looks very nice, cardboard average thickness, and nice inner sleeves. It was a relief when he sat out of a performance.
This 2015 remastering of the original 1997 release was done beautifully. If you'd heard this album without knowing it, you wouldn't believe it if someone told you it was recorded in 1996! My copy was perfectly flat, with no skips or pressing errors. Such a beautiful performance of music otherwise unknown to the outside world, this record has immense historical value in addition to the tracks that will simply make you grin listening to them. Ah, the song Chan Chan is magical and makes me happy! That wailing slide guitar just about ruined some great songs. I just felt that his additions to these recordings -- both in the studio and in their concert versions -- were intrusive at the least.
The vinyl press itself was perfect, the album comes over two discs and even comes with a brilliant little 20-page booklet with full lyrics in Spanish and English as well as the background to each song and pictures of the recording sessions. In the years that followed the original release, Buena Vista veterans toured the world and were the subject of a celebrated feature film directed by Wim Wenders. He's an original, often evocative guitarist and composer. It is not only a historical document; it is a living, breathing piece of work that guarantees the transference of emotion from tape to listener, and cements 's place not only in the Latin music pantheon, but in the larger context of popular music history. If you have a chance, track down 1997's Black Tears lagrimas Negras.
I really wanted to jump into the film, tap him on the shoulder and ask him to put down his guitar and just sit behind the mixing board! Check out the film documentary of the same name which features all the music plus interviews with these amazing musicians and their lives and times in Havana. The roots of the music are in pre-revolutionary Cuba, notably the Havana social scene of the 1950s, but these salsa rhythms rock with exuberance and a depth of feeling you'll rarely hear anywhere. This is a must-have for any record collection! One of my favorite vinyl purchases in a long time. The enclosed booklet contains ' original New York Times review of the performance and reminiscences from many of those involved in the evening, including and producer and backing guitarist.
Product Description Special edition cardboard sleeve. Die Produktion ist überraschend gut. Fully recommend for anyone looking to get into Latin music, a must-have. I'm surprised the gentlemen and ladies of the band didn't say anything. My one problem, however, is with Ry Cooder.
As is the standard for Nonesuch, the sound of the evening is fantastic, the spark in the mix has been left in, and the backing band sounds as varied and tight as it did in the film. Written by I just got to see this on video last night. The quality of this pressing is much higher than I expected. It'll have you dancing round the room and you'll be won over!
After 38 years of isolation, most of these Cuban musicians were unknown outside their native land and in their 70s and 80s by the time their music was exposed to a wider audience. Original 1997 release of 14 tracks with large insert booklet Amazon. The original Buena Vista Social Club album became a surprise international best seller and the most successful album in the history of Cuban music.
