The main characters have their integrity tested, but come through with flying colors. Despite being the poorer of the two schools, East Compton is determined to figure out a way to get to Nationals. She has a college boyfriend, super easy classes and is the newest Captain of the Rancho Carne High School Cheerleading Squad in San Diego. Whittier meets Derek Richard Lee Jackson , a campus deejay who immediately takes a shine to her. The issues of the white appropriation of black culture going back at least to Elvis and Pat Boone is an important one for kids to understand.
The two Captains butt heads and tensions rise between the two teams. Head cheerleader Tina Bree Turner is ready to ask them to join the team, but Dean Sebastian Kevin Cooney goes a step further, telling Tina that Whittier will be the next head cheerleader. She meets up with her friend from cheerleading camp, Monica Faune Chambers , and they're both impressive at the tryouts. And then real disaster strikes -- it turns out that their award-winning routines were stolen from another squad, African-American cheerleaders who could not afford to go to the national competitions. Everything seems perfect when Torrance gets a rude awakening.
The film also touches on the issue of whites' appropriation of black culture. Or is the focus mostly on social interaction and romance? Torrance has to face challenges of ethics, leadership and romance to sort all of this out before nationals. In a cheerleading dream sequence, a character's top falls off and the entire school sees it. This angers Tina's pal Marni Joie Lenz , who had the position staked out, but Tina goes along with the plan, taking Whittier under her wing. While male cheerleaders raise female cheerleaders into the air, one of the male cheerleaders gets his fingers close enough to a female cheerleader's vagina to make her moan in barely concealed pleasure. This is a satire of high school life, but the satire might be lost on younger viewers. A male cheerleader new to college is shown waking up in his dorm room with a girl in his bed. Is it similar to films that focus on sports competition? Whittier and Monica get fed up and quit the team, but Whittier's school spirit cannot be suppressed. With the Cheerleading Competition close at hand Missy convinces Torrance cannot go to Nationals with a stolen routine. With Monica's help, she gathers up the outcasts from the drama club, the dance club, and other groups that have lost their funding and forms a ragtag squad of her own, determined to battle the varsity squad for a spot at the national championship.
The previous captain handed down a flawless routine which is sure to dazzle the judges. But Bring It On Again is still a worthy entry into the growing girls' coming-of-age genre. But can they beat the varsity squad and its monomaniacal head cheerleader Tina? Bring It On Again has loveable characters, a good moral, and some good fun that will make many teen girls, well, cheer.
