Dip a long need or rod into the adhesive, and then insert it into the gap to apply the glue. Mildew, also known as mold, can destroy a book, and it can spread. Rub along the surface gently in one direction. There are many shortcuts you could take to do it in much less time. Lets start with the hinge.
For a detached cover, apply glue to the spine of the cover and the pages, stick them together, and weigh the book down while it dries for 24 hours. These are made from quadruple thickness wire and tied on to the backplate tightly using lots of plastic twine, then glued. Notice how the feathers converge on a single point and how the ends are fairly evenly spaced. Next we will cover the back plate in feathers. Another good source of E series engine, accessory, and Hartzell prop info. Each feather had fluffy fronds at it's base, see picture 2.
You can also use that glue to tighten up any space that has appeared between the text block — the chunk of pages that make up your book — and the spine of the book. They need to overlap by at least an inch, preferably more. In July of 2000 I purchased N5186K, a 1950 Ryan Navion A. Wipe off with clean cloth. It has superior binding strength, because it's made of quality, vinyl-coated cotton that has 45 lbs per inch tensile strength you'll see the high thread count of the material when you cut a piece with scissors. After all, if you holler for a part on a user group, you're bound to get a response from several folks in the same predicament. Bear in mind that these may not be and probably aren't the latest versions of these documents.
And here's a photo of the newly completed and installed panel. This spreads it open and softens the outline. You'll also want to make a couple small cuts so you have tabs the width of the spine to fold over and glue to the spine itself. I will explain as we go through. Then gently insert the needle or rod into the gap between the pages and spine and twirl it against both the text block and the spine.
With the membership you get access to more in-depth videos showing how to do the repairs you want to do. And if your book gets wet, the hair dryer can be a valuable emergency tool for drying. The non-reflective matte color doesn't lose its vibrancy over time, because the color is impregnated into the cloth material. After several days, remove the paper towel and repeat as necessary until as much of the stain as possible is removed and you should have a fairly clean book. Position them with the bamboo inside the rings and glue and bind them tightly like you did with the hinge.
Picture 1 shows how there is a space over the elbow of the wing. . Cut 4 triangles from the card. Pick the one you prefer, and use it as a starting baseline for annual inspections. I bought the best quality feathers I could find; the box of 1250 came to about 180 pounds, but you might be able to find feathers elsewhere for much less. And to complicate matters, there are half a dozen different pitch angles scattered across various manuals.
Feel free to adjust them as you feel. Picture 1 shows the rings in place on the shorter spar and the inside end of the longer spar. The important thing is that they do minimum damage to your books and keep them clean. Her work on this volume is artful, accessible, knowledgeable, and exacting: the same as her repairs. A hole punch for the card and a drill for the ply would do instead. I've done the hard part, why reinvent the wheel? Next cover the back of the backplate the same way you did the wings. Fifty years of vibration caused the tank to fail at that point, and the repair consisted of having a certified aircraft welder reinforce and patch the weak area. You could manage with just two, one attached to each spar but it would look less effective on spreading. I wrapped my cloth fairly snug to help hold the book together.
