In the town of Carsely, the only time for an outing in the evening is the Ladies Society meeting. When this 53 year old executive decides to retire and move away from the big city, it becomes a bumble and stumble life in the country. A small town whodunnit with the twist being the main character. They insist that she is able to solve the criminal activities through her luck and by chance. I loved Agatha as well as the rest of the entertaining cast of characters almost as much as I enjoy 's other cozy series, set in a small village in Scotland and featuring Hamish Macbeth, another flawed though more likable hero. She enters a local baking contest with a quiche she bought in London; not only does she not win, but her quiche kills one of the judges.
Filling: The characters and plot come together seamlessly, with twists and substance enough to stay interesting. Her first efforts to start to break into the society include entering a ringer into a village cooking contest: hearing that Mrs. It was funny and endearing. As a character she is extremely well-written because she is flawed and can be mean but you like her any way. I just wish they made her hair brunette with a reddish tint. Agatha is a fun character and I look forward to reading more in this series. After purchasing her quiche in London, the quiche judge dies from poison after eating Agathas' quiche. But not before providing lots of laughs.
It captured my attention right away with its prickly protagonist Agatha Raisin. She then moved to the Scottish Daily Express where she reported mostly on crime. I could not help it. The Cotswolds is one of the most scenic beautiful places in the world, filled with charming villages, thatched-roof cottages dating back hundreds of years and I was interested to see if this might be something I would enjoy. The Quiche of Death is the beginning of her adventures or misadventures in pursuing her dreams.
Unfortunately she looks nothing like this cool glamorous blonde who closer resembles Priscilla from the Hamish Macbeth series. However, rural life is harder than she imagines and, with no work to fill her day, she finds herself isolated and bored. I really enjoyed this little book. You will find yourself laughing out loud fairly often with the quips and wisecracks. In this novel Agatha is new to the area and finds out there is going to be a quiche contest to see who is the best, so she decides to buy one from a shop but then things go all down hill for her and she ends up trying to find out just who the poisoner is. Agatha Raisin is a not-very-likable woman who struggles to understand why people don't like her, even as she bull-dozes her way through life.
But this was a meandering sort of is-it isn't-it hit-or-miss investigation — which I suppose it was intended to be given that Agatha wasn't supposed to be and didn't intend to be investigating — with one vital piece of information withheld until nearly the end. Now I'll have to go out and find the sequels and it looks like there are a lot of them.
