One of my favorite Randolph Scotts. He likes to remind Wilde that his busboys earn more than Wilde! There have been similar jobs in similar towns, lots of them. Not too bad an ending even if he did have to go off with Angela which make him seem a bit tamed.
It was a little film noir dropping in on a western and quite a welcome touch. I remember this film as having good action sequences so I especially enjoyed the quote from Pate about some of his work in that regard! Will he do his duty and rid the town of his outlaw element, or will he hang up his guns as Tally wants him to? And direction is what makes a difference here. Have enjoyed them both in many things and it was great to have them both turn up in this Western. Nice little sub plot about the Brions. We used to count on a two-and-a-half or three million gross domestically and four million or more worldwide. Now ironically having mentioned that Calem is a man who hides his real feelings from everyone you have Randolph Scott delivering a very typical Randolph Scott performance.
But he is determined to clean up one last town, run by bandits, who don't want to see the territory become a state. The titles and opening sequence make quite an impact. In addition, Frank Hagney and Jeanette Nolan are quite good in parts well crafted by Gamet who wrote eight Scott Westerns in all. Lewis always brought a strong sense of style to his pictures — along with a budget-be-damned desire to put something with real flair on the screen. Scott makes a good, twinkle-eyed loner hero and Angela Lansbury is quite attractive as his leggy showgirl love interest, though she would begin playing mothers of grown children just a few years later but their romance is rather obligatory and uninspired. And in A Lawless Street, this drive is obvious the second the Columbia lady gets out of the way.
Lewis over the past year or two. Plus add in a romantic element which sees his one true love, his estranged wife Tally show up in town and you have on the surface a routine western which works through various set pieces till it gets to a final shootout. The exception to that is Angela Lansbury as Tally Dickenson because it is Tally who struggles with Calem's life and we can feel that she loves him but can't deal with watching him shoot or brawl in order to keep the peace. Lewis Running time : 77 Minutes Language : English Share this Product. Joining Lewis behind the camera was cinematographer Ray Rennahan, one of the true masters of three-strip Technicolor — he shot the first feature in the process, Becky Sharp 1935.
To make matters worse his estranged wife Tally Dickenson arrives in town and it stirs up old feelings as she left him because she couldn't cope watching him kill others in the name of peace. A Lawless Street 1955 Randolph Scott stars as Marshal Coleen Wave, a lawman who moves from town to town in the Colorado Territory, ridding each of its outlaws. We have a couple of businessmen who see Marshal Calem Ware as the barrier to them turning the town into a gold mine and so are willing to do what ever it takes to get what they want which includes hiring killers to try and kill him. Lewis keeps things moving, throwing a split second of action at you when you're not expecting it and employing some unconventional camera angles or at least ones which are not the norm for a 1950s western.
Like most of the Scotts, this one has a terrific cast. Then again, I love anybody who had anything to do with They Were Expendable. It is enough that they are rare and difficult to access. Always trying to keep things moving.
One of the things I liked regarding the film was the supporting cast of actresses, Jean Parker and Ruth Donnelly. It has Randolph Scott delivering the same sort of upstanding character he played in many of his westerns, it has corrupt business men, hired guns plus a romantic angle all of which combine as it builds to an action fuelled climax. But in a way that makes it even more interesting because in those moments of solitude when the real Calem is allowed to come out we get a different Randolph Scott, an almost vulnerable tired old man giving us the contrast needed. And never does style get in the way of telling the story.
It was quite a stylish movie which had a couple of unforgettably staged scenes. And a great part for Wallace Ford. Keeping the peace in the town of Medicine Bend, Ware hopes to someday be reconciled with his ex-wife Tally Dickinson Angela Lansbury , now a touring musical comedy star. Not surprisingly, Ruth Donnelly made the most of her role as the landlady who looked after Calem. Both the villains are effective, Warner Anderson as the unscrupulous what else? There is also the under explored cleverness of the storyline which sees businessman Hamer Thorne bring showgirl Tally Dickenson to town with an idea of marrying her unaware that she is in fact married to Calem but estranged due to the violent nature of his job. .
