The center shaft in a 4x4 trans… as far as it fitting the blocks are the same but the theres a few things that wont interchange so while it will fit it won't work unless you know what changes you have to make, your best bet is to buy a block from 1990 and up unless you'er just going to run the motor and nothing else, you can call me with any questions at 636-575-0255, thanks harry It's actually quite easy just did mine in under 30 min. Sure could have used this write up last Summer! I used the longer bolts in the bottom holes tightening a little one each side to pull the trans partly together. Make alignment marks on the flywheel and the torque converter. Slide the halves together and remove the front drive shaft if the shaft will not slide together, spray more penetrant on it now, then remove it along with the transfer case - make sure your not under it when it falls. Please contact your local dealer for latest info.
If possible you should try to space out the steps, or maybe play with font to make it a little easier on the eyes? The universal joint, which is on the front facing side of your rear end, has 4 bolts. Check to ensure that nothing is still connected or hung up on the transfer case. If the air conditioning system in your vehicle needs refrigerant, be sure the proper refrigerant is used. I then removed the long bolts from the bottom holes and installed the studs. Its not the place that changed the oil its the person that did not change the trans oil in 122k. Remove the 2 15mm bolts holding the starter to the engine I also removed the starter and selenoid wires 10mm and 12mm I think, but you may be able to just tuck the starter up into the frame to get it out of the way and leave the electrical stuff hooked up. Check to ensure that nothing is still connected or hung up on the transmission.
You will still need the ignition key to provide power and unlock the steering wheel. After sitting for a couple of minutes I then got it to engage and get it home. Remove the 2 nuts and washers holding the transmission mount to the cross member. Note: all capacities are approximate. I've seen bunch of issues on this tranfer specific 246 tranfer case but no exact answers. Unplug the cooler lines and tie them back as best you can. Remove the transfer case skid plate by turning the nuts on top of the 4 skid plate bolts 15mm I think until the whole bolt spun then hold the bolts with a torx bit I could get much more solid loosening force on the nuts than on the torx bolts.
We had the same issue of staying down in 2nd and then hitting neutral and not going anywhere. Using a prybar, turn the flywheel until one of the torque converter bolts is visible. After the vehicle is warmed up 30 min of driving , the vehicle will slip into neutral between 3rd and 4th gear. I thought maybe something was just slightly hung up in the transfer case. Move the secondary jack to the rear of the engine and support it.
Attempting this yourself can be rough, and expensive, if you damage the heated yoke, or the driveshaft itself. Took by a transmission shop twice to let them listen. Shop had 3 on shelf because they see a lot of them. Usually noise and weirdness doesn't get better magically; Anyway, mine slipped out of D at 65 mph on an incline. Remove the vent hose from the top of the transmission.
Note: not all air conditioning refrigerants are the same. Turn the flywheel and remove the other 2 bolts. This has been a fantastic vehicle, one I'm hoping to hold onto for much longer. Maybe seperate your parts list etc? Then lift it off the primary jack careful it's fairly heavy. Sorry for the length of post, but I ask a lot of questions trying to reduce wallet-flush! Michael answered 5 years ago There is a long history of problems with the transmissions in these vehicles. Transmission fluid is fine just had the oil, etc. Maw1959 answered 4 years ago Hi.
Remove the 6 15mm bolts holding the torque converter cover. Transmission fluid has a high detergent additive in it , with the old fluid it was not cleening the transmission parts inside and probably the trans would have gone out from poor maintence anyway. I came here trying to figure out any year to avoid,I think the Suburban is great. Did they use the wrong fluid, this could damage the clutches then the servos and valve body, things get sticky and does not get you into gear. In the front next to the two transfer cases. Disconnect the shift cable from the drivers side of the trans. I know the family they are really good people.
Guru5P3K8 answered about a year ago Question. Of the 86 complaints listed on your website for this model, 7 involved and others involved the drivetrain which can be an associated problem. . The overall length of the transmission may be slightly different so you will need to check drive shaft lengths and re-drill the cross member holes. As long as the vehicle doesn't have an ignition key security system to prevent starting without the proper key then it can be fitted with a momentary contact switch or button.
Be careful to ensure the trans is straight and the guide pins are seating, the bell housing is just aluminum and any binding could risk damaging the transmission case. Ron answered 3 years ago I have read that the newer than 02 has the 4L65E trans. Dono2010van answered 3 years ago Steve, I just encountered the same thing. Make alignment marks on the rear drive shaft and the differential yoke. She moved it into multiple drive slots with no luck. It is not fair to consumers for an auto maker to know about severe problems like this with vehicles and not issue a recall or correct the problem.
Move the cable above the brake lines or some other place to hold it out of the way. While i think that not every shop is this bad,I would bet that many so called bad trannys are just something minor. After changing the tranfer case with another 246 all the gears stopped working. The issues in our transmission started late last summer, 2002. That will cause you to make sure the spline length is the same. I know this may sound like a dumb question but I just don't want to miss a nice opportunity if the vehicle transmission stays in good shape.
