You might want to have someone helping you at this point, as if you drop the headlight you could seriously damage it. The light assembly in our case did take some coaxing to get it to slide out and we had to play with it for awhile, but it did finally come out. The bulb is held in with a spring-like wire. It may take a bit of a push because there is some gooey adhesive between the headlight and the fender. Be patient, and take your time. I just replaced both headlights on a 99 beetle.
This pair of Aftermarket Volkswagen Eos Head Lamp bulbs is from Nokya's Cosmic White series. Also pull the liver up and out toward the light. Additionally I had only one high beam on the passenger side ; both low beams were fine, but I did not have a Daytime Running Light on the drivers side. Twice the cost of the first one at O'briens auto store. It is simple but it is hard, beleve me. Line up the tabs on the headlight assembly to the slots in the headlight housing in the fender and push the whole thing in.
Put the spring clip back on and make sure the ends of the clip are in securely. I would add to the above the following: 1. Also on slide back in make sure fully seated so lever locks. Then next to the lever you can see small rectanglearea with little xxxx kind of. It�s not that hard at all. No need for any special tools. Carefully disconnect the clip connection from the back of the bulb, unlock the wire pressure clasp and pull the bulb out.
Moving the lever down releases the complete unit that can then be withdrawn out the front of the fender. Behind this cover, in between the battery and the headlight, youwill see a black rectangular box being held by a pressure clip. Once more German engineering wins out. Put it on a pillow or something soft so you don�t risk scratching the lens. This needs to be depressed to release the slide mechanism which releases the headlight. It's easy, under the hood on the headlight casing is a lever like thing, careful it is fragile pull the lever up or down can't remember. Don't need to replace the whole headlight assembly, you only need to repair your plastic headlight lens cover, it means only need to replace the lenses cover and then your headlights can back to condition as new.
Sometimes things won�t line up on the first try, but keep trying. The headlight aim should not have been affected during this procedure. It has two slots that pieces of the light mechanism slide into and lock into place. Avoid touching the glass of the halogen bulb with bare hands. Both high and low beam bulbs are H1 bulbs. When putting the wire holder back on simply push the left side of the wire back onto the hook, all very tricky but all you need to do is hook that left wire under the metal retainer clip, so left and then up, the left side will then click into place - all done. Once you get it to this point, grab the release lever, push all the way down, and lock the headlight assembly into place.
There is an arm that extends toward the engine. There Is a lever for each headlight that releases the unit to slide out forward. OnceI did that I was able to properly seat the bulb note: Aligning thethree little grooves is very important. Note that on the driver's side there is a bulb access plate held on by two Philips head screws. The reason the left turn signal blinks very fast is because one of the bulbs are burned out.
Next time it goes out slide will be easier. To add just a bit of detail to the suggestion above, the air induction housing is held in place by two Phillips head screws where it meets the front grill. The lamps are in a plug-in fixture. It is locked in place by a sliding rotating retaining ring at the back of the headlight. Next the clasp and metal strap you will notice the lever that expels the light assembly. There is a spring or hasp that keeps the lamp in the housing. Do not attempt to replace bulbs while vehicle is on. When you are putting in the bulb it needs to be pressed in slightly to make sure the rubber ring on the bulb offers a snug fit to the light housing. Low beam is a 55 watt bulb, and high beam is 60 watts. The headlight is in a long, plastic tube. Just don't force anything too hard and you should be okay.
Remove the air induction housing and the bulb can be accessed quite easily. I hope that you are referring to the bulb and not the assembly. It may be necessary to unplug the headlight bulb before removing the wire snap that holds the headlight bulb in place. However, you usually don't have to remove the battery. Since the driver side light is more interesting we will do that one. There is a plastic cap that comes off and you can access the headlight bulbs 7. Nokya Heavy Duty Harnesses are recommended for use with this application.
Once it's loose, pull firmly and you will have the bulb in your hand, still attached to the wires. Though they are widely distributed throughout the industry, and their quality rivals that of the German and Japanese lighting giants, they do almost no marketing, instead pouring every dollar into the development and optimization of their Head Light Bulb line.
