Local waterway car wash is refusing to wash these vehicles due to rapid and unattended acceleration issues which have caused accidents at their car washes. The simplistic interior styling is classic jeep all the way! It occurs without warning and at any speed. Instead this is where the Limited trim shows its value. Vehicle was covered by a full warranty and an extended warranty but these problems were never repaired. Several tractor trailers had to brake hard to avoid running into the rear of my vehicle. We cannot afford to repair this car.
The repair takes around 20 minutes, the actuator is tucked into a very tight spot so it takes a little patience but will save you a huge amount of money. Usually it's the other way around. They said it was a serious problem. Since vehicle had 190,000 Kilometers there was no warranty. Had vehicle towed to dealer. I have run 2 tanks of BioDiesel 20% B20 and it has not missed a beat. We even gave the tailpipe a sniff while the Grand Cherokee idled in the parking lot of our office, and there was no soot or the awful eau de diesel that one might smell if you tried the same stunt with an older diesel vehicle.

The rubber seal at the intake is defective so oil drips outside the intake down onto the electrical connector for the swirl motor and causes the swirl motor to fail. The first thing you notice is its power off the line—it feels unstoppable. I am really pissed at Chrysler Canada that there was not a bulletin on this defect as Mercedes issued one in 2009 and did not notify Canadian customers. Wasn't willing to pay the extra 1400. There will be no noticeable difference in performance. They consider the vehicles to be a safety risk. You can be driving along at any speed and you will lose throttle control. In less than a year from the date of purchase, the vehicle had major repairs including a complete engine replacement and an exhaust system replacement.
This concern can happen at very low mileages: our featured vehicle had only 61,000 kilometers on the clock! My 11 month old son was with me, and then we were stuck blocking traffic at one of the busiest intersections in town. If anyone out there has access to it, we need to see it. The swirl motor is a useless component that swirls air into your turbo when you are at low speeds. I took the car into the local Chrysler dealership and the mechanic discovered that the swirl motor actuator had failed. We didn't have an opportunity to drive the diesel off road, but its torque characteristics seem like they would marry perfectly with rock hopping and trail riding. Very nice, very powerful, very comfortable and very confidence inspiring.
They put it on their diagnostic and never detected that the swirl motor was disabled. This engine was provided by Mercedes for 2 years when they were partners in 2007-2008. The turbocharger boasts vanes that vary the turbine inlet geometry to spool up quickly and then flow high-speed exhaust efficiently. Output is a right respectable 215 horsepower and 376 lb-ft--enough to match the tow ratings of the brawny 5. .
Chronic failure of the electronic throttle. Black instrument inserts and faux wood trim round out the entire package. Chrysler would not acknowledge this problem. The swirl valves are located inside the intake manifold and are operated by a motor which is located between the two manifolds and under the turbo intake pipe. There it sat for 6 weeks before I went to do the swirl mod and it started and drove just fine. First time at 80,000km and second time at 230,000.
On this Jeep we found so much oil in and on the motor that it left a small puddle on our work bench. I put 150K on the 01 and it was just sold over book value in great condition. I have previously filed complaints. The replacement was paid for by the dealer. As this is the Merc unit I thought it was bullet proof. We should be reimbursed the full amount as I am finding out this is a design flaw of the engine.
This has caused several near miss accidents. The age of the diesel is dawning on the United States, and because of vehicles like this Grand Cherokee, we should run out and enjoy each new day. Although this is the entry level cherokee it is still very classy! I am very upset about this I always thought that Jeep were good to have. The turbo veins have zero side to side play and spins freely, as I was told to get at them from the air inlet to see if the turbo itself was toast. The gear changes from the 5-speed automatic are smooth, and once on the highway, the transmission rarely needs to downshift because the engine produces so much torque. This presents a very dangerous driving hazard to the driver and the passengers in the Jeep and to any other vehicles nearby.
