On my 1997 E320 with the inline 6 engine 190000 miles I have replace the camshaft and crank position sensors but I still get P0341 error. If you guessed Balance Shaft Failure, you win! I always put the same oil Mobil 0W40. The outer gear is supposed to be put on the rod all the way in, and this was something I failed to notice when I was disassembling the old adjuster.

If the outer gear had slid or break that tiny piece of the inner rod's gear teeth, it would freely rotate without turning the intake camshaft.
