I've never experienced any problems like this before, and maybe I'm informing the wrong people. Something popped and the most awful gas smell came out and never went away everybody around us could smell it. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. I need to gain access to the circuit board in mine so I can perform the same solder fix. I live in a small town but I have a Radio Shack 2 blocks from where I work so if I can get what I need there, all the better.
My delorship carlsbad Ford said they can not get any information on the delay. Those two screws are the only screws fastening this trim piece. There are 4 resistors on the back of the display that the solder joints wear out over time. The problem I had was just plain and simple. If you're not comfortable doing this take it to a friend who is. You will receive a tracking number when it ships back out. Radio is on, cant see the display.
It may not be the same problem that mine had. The key just turns a full 360 degree in the chamber and makes no connection with anything. Radio is on, cant see the display. This is for radios manufactured by Visteon. Factory service centers take 3+ weeks to perform repairs, so we're clearly exceeding the standard. Now if I can find out why I have a popping coming out of the steering column as if it's coming from my shocks. Check with a local radio repair shop and they can remove the radio and install new bulbs.
If it has been damaged by prior attempts to diagnose or repair a problem, additional parts may be required and, if so, additional costs will be incurred. We are not responsible for the misuse, incorrect installation, incorrect information, or failure of any products we cover. If the radio won't turn on at all, the unit is defective and will need to be replaced. They did not address it. Losing total power like changing the battery will call for the radio to come back on in the locked position making enter the code to unlock it.
You've already done the hard part of getting the radio out, the rest is easy. It needed some small stuff fixed but I'm actually glad for that because I've been able to learn about the rig and get my hands dirty and fix some issues. A replacement screen was ordered but has been on back order for almost 4 weeks contacted Ford customer service twice but they will not help. If anyone cares, this is the rig I need this fix for: 2006 Expedition Limited, 4x4, all the bells and whistles as far as I can tell except navigation and air ride. However; this time he wasn't able to turn the ignition off. Be very careful if you try this, as a big soldering iron, or a lot of heat will destroy the components and board. They are consistant but with pretty thin lined characters.
I saw this article and did the fix on the radio yesterday and it is lit up like a tree!!! Without knowing the vintage or model number of the radio, and without any initial troubleshooting info from you, there's little except guessing left! Seems like this is a common defect that Ford should fix at no cost. The consumer stated when the system failed, the screen went black and the radio and temperature control stopped working, as well as other components. They addressed the recall and smell by putting adshesive tape and sealant glue called and told it it was ready. Do at your own risk Lol I put my inverter under the second row seat. Remove the dash trim surrounding the radio. Remove the four T-8 Torx screws on the radio faceplate - two at the top, and two at the bottom - see the red arrows in the 'after' picture above pointing to their approximate location.
I have a '98 but have had no problems with the radio yet. I was also told that this is a very common problem with this radio. I can't tell you how nice it is to have a bright display again, you don't realize how irritating something so simple like this can be until you're forced to stare at it every day in a vehicle you use all the time, very irritating. I have tried contacting my dealer for a solution, Ford for a solution, and even pioneer electronics, the manufacturer of the unit for a solution. Don't worry about that mark. I can see my radio again! Something popped and the most awful gas smell came out and never went away everybody around us could smell it.
I've included my 'after-soldering' picture for your info - note I burnt the board just a tad on the lower left solder connection you can see it a bit , but wasn't enough to cause a problem. If so how did you fix it and the cost? It needed some small stuff fixed but I'm actually glad for that because I've been able to learn about the rig and get my hands dirty and fix some issues. I have heard that the stereos were built with a little fan on the back end of them a year or so after mine was made.
