Or even what a ford windsor motor is? My '97 has been great, but the repair list is getting longer at 159K miles. How cold is it where you are doing this? Do you even know what a chevy 350 vs a vortec 350 is? You don't just slap parts on and call it a different engine unless it is a totally different engine block design. There are three types of transmission Ford used. Truck had plenty of power to spare, 2 adults in the cabin. If it was same engine they would of just called it one name! Plus on top of the extra power, you have a much better spread transmission. I just towed a friends running 67 Impalla 3450 pounds stuffed with another 500+ pounds of extra parts 450 miles on a flatbed trailer across east Texas. We reasoned it was worth it to put a new re-man tranny in because the cost of a new tow vehicle was going to run in the 20k plus range for anything that we felt compared to our vehicle, and that would be a used vehicle with approximately the same mileage our current vehicle has.
If this motor has any balls, the trans wont let it show. I usually run 87 octane, but have occasionally used 91 octane while on long trips. One trans for 2wd, 1 is used for 1 speed transfer case non control trac, the other is 2 speed transfer case with control trac. The tranny crapped out and the body was rusting out, wasn't worth the money to keep it on the road. I will say if you expect to tow, the 4. I would also probably avoid the 02's unless you get a warranty. Yes I had it rebuilt at 90K and I now have 190K on it and it shifts and pulls loads just fine.
Brought home four loads two yards each of crusher run gravel some time ago. Much better power band on that motor than the 2V. Can I assume that an '02 - '05 V6 Explorer has more power than a '97 V6 Explorer? I had a 1992 Explorer that had a 4. Highway mileage drops fast if you drive over 70. I'd probably entertain '06 and newer as well. Anyone want to predict the result?? Much better power band on that motor than the 2V.
Well now that is different. For most of the trip I didn't even know the load was back there but the fuel gauge sure reminded me. If so there are similar parts in a V8. My wife primary driver gets about 15mpg in town, and gets 22-23mpg on the highway. I won;t buy another Ford despite the fact I have 3 in my driveway now. You might get better mpg in a v6 but think of it this way.
I may be shopping around in the future for a 2002 - 2005 year Explorer. I have the V8, I get 15-16 city mpg. The triton is different otherwise please explain why my spark plugs or any other 3rd gen owner hasn't popped out? The engine in that Explorer ran flawlessly and was still running great when I junked the truck. We had some tranny adjustment issues that were resolved right away, and in the last 6 months it has run very well for us. On a side note: A couple years ago a neighbor stopped by to say hello and I asked how he liked his new Escape.
Once again no no they didn't. And the 2004 + is better for me to look at? He got it really quick and liked driving the V8. I had a 1992 Explorer that had a 4. I did take it to the dyno a few months ago and she laid down 216hp and 270tq. Plus on top of the extra power, you have a much better spread transmission. Internet research confirmed lots of owners were having similar problems: total brake jobs every 25k miles, front 50k and real wheel bearings 67k , rear door trim bezel cracked 3x fixed 1st time under warranty, I paid 2nd time, left as-is 3rd time , and the real killer - a complete tranny overhaul at only 67k miles. It's very possible to make it work, but I personally don't think it's worth it.
Go do a little research please! It's a nice size V6 4. Actually, I was plesantly surpirsed during the test drive at the V6's pep - more than I had anticipated. I just heard in the past that the V8 Explorers were more reliable than the V6 models. Wait a minute, are you suggesting that you are only getting 8. Keep it under 70 and I get about 24. If you have the 6 speed then you also have the 3V 4. I haven't bothered getting this stuff fixed yet.
When the throttle was just touched the truck would launch very quickly. Got annoying wind noise coming from somewhere around the a-pillars, and the mirrors have had water in the signals since new. Added the tune and went 15. I've driven Fords all my life, and this was by far the worst I've ever owned. I maintain it myself and have always changed the oil and filters regulary. My 05 is a 5R55W.
