The car would not start, when we got it started heard this cracking sound under the hood, popped the hood and my husband said you just threw a rod. This, of course, is only after we replaced all the wheel bearings and put new tires on it. Any auto parts store could tell you forsure. If the timing chain has worn through the tensioner arm into the tensioner piston, remove the oil pan from the engine and clean the debris from the oil pickup tube. While the current Explorer is a vast improvement over its predecessor, it competed in a market with many more choices. Recurring problem since the car was new. Explorer leads its class in third-row headroom and legroom. I'm inclined to think that they may have put this cover only on the Limited and possibly the Eddie Bauer model. A rattle in the engine started to appear at 85,000 miles, took it in and was told that it was typical of the Ford 4. The service advisor said that the rotors on the rear were worn and needed to be replaced.
Hopefully I have just saved someone else a lot of heartache. This made me curious enough to go to ebay motors and check out 2002 and 2004 V8 Explorers that are for sale. Its main drawbacks were an unrefined V6 engine and unimpressive performance on our off-road course. I do not recall having the V8 logo. I guess I should thank my lucky stars that I surpassed 100,000 miles before my engine quit on me. All I know is that it was black and it made the top of the engine inaccessible to reach in and clean out the acorns left by a chipmunk or whatever. Mind you this car did not give me any warning!! I somehow believe its related to the air intake. When it gets really cold, my car will ping and sputter until I step on the gas. Many Ford Explorers have this problem.
