Occasionally the instrument cluster moved rapidly and registers 0. Besides, what does a bad instrumentation cluster have to do with maintenance??? I also have issues with the car occasionally not wanting to start or reving of the engine and all of my dummy lights coming on I was told that is my ignition switch, however when I contacted gm they informed me Cavaliers used a different switch than the ones in the recall. There were no warning lights illuminated; however, the interior lights would not illuminate. I recommend a recall on cluster panels for all Cavaliers and modules, wiring as well. There are three main causes for a Cavalier's digital odometer not functioning correctly: the fuse has blown, the odometer's wiring connector is loose or the instrument cluster has gone bad. First, temperature gauge read higher and higher each time the car was started until the needle went all the way around to the speedometer and kept the speedometer from reading the speed.
By simply pulling it up from the sides. Everything else works, the lights on dash the turn signals. On the top-middle of the dash there is a vent to defrost your windshield. Has never been repaired although they claim they fixed it. A quick temporary fix is, while the car is off, to remove the dash cluster fuse and reinsert it, which resets all the gauges at 0. Then it stopped working, then would alternate between all that all being too high or too low.
I can not teach him how to drive in it, because the cluster doesn't function and the ignition switch issues. Have no clue why it stopped working and personal mechanic is appalled at the issue. All of the gauges, with the exception of the odometer, does not work. The repair completed was a cheaper route than replacing the actual switch. There are 2 screws that hold on a metal bracket, remove them.
I have to limit my driving to daytime driving and only use the running lights as it appears to only aggravate the problem when I use my headlights. I replaced the instrument cluster with one from a junk yard. This has been happening for probably 3 years. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000. All the other gauges: The gas gage, the thermometer gauges and the mph gage never work right. The speedometer and fuel gauge failed to operate properly and displayed inaccurate readings.
She contacted the manufacturer and was advised there were no recalls on the vehicle and that they were unable to assist. The 2005 Cavaliers are having the same problems!! Like all of these people my speedometer stopped working on my 2004 chevrolet cavalier. I was about to have a mechanic fix my car and I did some online research. There really should be a recall!! Then my fuel gauge went out. It is obviously not very safe not knowing how fast you are going, or if your car is overheating or not.
The tachometer no longer works at all and constantly shows a faulty reading below zero. This problem needs to be a recall from gm. At times, it registers at 0mph - even when you're driving. Then remove the screws under the vent so that the dash can be completly removed. I've noticed a lot of complaints online for the exact same problem with the Chevy Cavalier. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. Also, I was left stranded at 2:30 am with my 3 year old son when the clutch fell through the floor.
Have to wait a couple of days, then it may start or not. It can be reset the speedometer once the car cools off but when you are driving and have no idea what speed you are going it is a major problem that needs to be corrected by Chevy. I never knew that anyone else could be having the same issue, i thought it was something that i did and not a world wide defect. Took the alternator out and had it checked. If you don't report it a recall will not be issued. I would be banned from the internet if I said what I really want to say to Chevy. The only gauge in the cluster that is working is the tachometer.
Heard some noises like the fuel pump and then restarted the car, viola fixed! Update from Apr 15, 2013 : Now all of my gauges have stopped working in the cluster. The solutions for the three issues are fairly straightforward and you should not need more than half an hour to perform them. Go through the list and click the required link:----- 2009 Toyota Corolla: Fuse Box Module Removal? Loss of power, engine and power brakes. After I connected the cable, all the gauges stopped working and a bunch of dash lights remained on. Nov 23, 2012 Thanks for voting! The vehicle has not been taken into the dealer to be diagnosed. Well, explain to me why it took months for the thing to come in and me having to constantly call the dealership!! Im sure if someone from Chevy teenager had a cav doing this or got hurt because of this something would be done. I have researched online and haven't seen a recall but I really feel that one is necessary in this case.
