Like me, others have reported seeing no leaks or oil burning smoke out the exhaust, but still, it guzzles 1 quart every 150 miles for me and others have numbers that are close to this. Your oil consumption is about par for a Corolla of that vintage and mileage. With my '98 Corolla, I'm using a liter of oil every 800 - 1000 km or so. Just chalked it up to the engine being a noisy powerplant. Next; which is the most annoying to me, are the valves clacking under load until they warm up and metal expands to their proper fits and tolerances. If there is no continuity between any segments, replace the starter armature. This will tell you a lot about whether there will be any benefit to an overhaul. If the surface is dirty or burnt, smooth the surface with 400—grit sandpaper or lathe. If you are using an oil heavier than 5W30, this will contribute to your problem. For those of you who may live in the Montreal area, would any of you know of the engine rebuilder that Toyota goes to to get their engines rebuilt? Exactly what component is making that noise?.
